At the SummerSlam pay-per-view in 2018, Becky Lynch took on Charlotte Flair and then-SmackDown Women's Champion, Carmella. It was a Triple Threat match with the championship on the line. Flair captured the gold in the end, pinning Carmella after Lynch had almost made 'The Queen of Staten Island' tap-out.

Following the match is where business picked up, and the birth of 'The Man' happened. The only problem was, WWE was portraying Becky Lynch as the heel, but the fans continued to cheer her on. Becky was furious with what had just happened as she ferociously attacked Charlotte with a chorus of cheers from the WWE Universe in attendance. Eventually, WWE had no other choice but to make her a fan favorite as she was receiving positive ovations everywhere she went.
