Daniel Bryan was the most over wrestler in 2014. However, WWE never thought of him main-eventing WrestleMania.
After Batista returned to the company after four years, everyone knew who was going to win the Royal Rumble that year. That happened, but with 'Daniel Bryan' chants during the match as the fans wanted him to win, but he was not even a part of the match. This led to Batista being booed after his much-awaited return to WWE. WWE then added Bryan to Elimination Chamber, only to make him lose. However, the fans didn't lose the faith in him and kept on cheering him.
Because of the cheers he received, Batista was turned heel and Bryan getting a match with Triple H at WrestleMania for a spot in the main event. The rest, as they say, is history. Daniel Bryan defeated all the members of Evolution on the same night and sent fans home happy.
However, no one would have expected that Daniel Bryan would have main-event WrestleMania after losing Elimination Chamber and not winning the Royal Rumble. It was a great shock from WWE to the fans and the shock that the fans actually liked.
