WWE has used "on a pole" matches in the past with different feuds having their own additional thing added to the pole. Sometimes there would be a weapon and other times there could be a contract.

WWE decided to add the Extreme Rules twist to the usual "on a pole match" back in 2017 when The Goddess, Alexa Bliss defended the Raw Women's Championship against Bayley. The rules of the match stated that the woman who was able to climb up and unhook the kendo stick was the only one who was allowed to use it within the rules, which was a painful end to any feud.

Alexa Bliss was the one who was able to take down the kendo stick and use it to her advantage to retain her Raw Women's Championship. Bayley definitely felt the brunt of being on the losing end of the match since the current SmackDown Women's Champion went on to share pictures of her scars on her Instagram page following the show.
