The Undertaker is yet to answer John Cena's WrestleMania challenge

With WWE WrestleMania 34 on the horizon, we are building up to the event by taking a look at five key facts about the biggest matches at this year’s “Showcase of the Immortals”.

In this article, we focus on the yet-to-be-announced WrestleMania dream match between John Cena and The Undertaker.

Will “Big Match John” become the third man in history to defeat “The Deadman” on the grand ‘Mania stage? Will ‘Taker return to winning ways in the same arena where ‘The Streak’ was ended four years ago? Will he show up at all?!

John Cena and The Undertaker don't go face-to-face very often

Wondering why John Cena vs. The Undertaker is such a dream match? It’s because the two WWE icons have hardly crossed paths during their WWE careers, let alone at WrestleMania.

The only previous PPV meeting between the two men came at Vengeance 2003 when, in arguably the fourth highest-profile match on the card, ‘Taker defeated the relative WWE newcomer with a Last Ride.

Since then, and especially in the last five years, there have been persistent rumours on an annual basis about the men colliding at WrestleMania. For various reasons, it’s never happened – until this Sunday (hopefully!).

#4 John Cena is currently on his worst PPV losing run ever

John Cena's losing run started against Roman Reigns

The build-up to John Cena vs. The Undertaker has largely centred around Cena’s unsuccessful attempts to carve himself a ‘Road to WrestleMania’ for this year’s show in New Orleans.

During that time, he lost matches against Roman Reigns at No Mercy and Team Raw at Survivor Series, while he was unable to win multi-man matches at the Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber and Fastlane.

Cena’s last victory on PPV came against Baron Corbin at SummerSlam 2017, which means he has lost his last five PPV matches – the worst run of his career.

#3 The Undertaker and John Cena have teamed together eight times

According to wrestling stats database Cagematch.net, The Undertaker and John Cena have teamed up on eight occasions (including live events) during their WWE careers.

The two men have a surprisingly good record when they’re on the same side, winning seven of their eight matches as a team (87.5% win ratio), with the first victory coming on an episode of SmackDown in 2002 against Chris Jericho and Kurt Angle.

Their only defeat occurred on the King of the Ring episode of Raw in April 2008 when they teamed with Kane and Triple H in a losing effort against Chavo Guerrero, Edge, JBL and Randy Orton.

#2 The Undertaker has never lost consecutive WrestleMania matches

Roman Reigns defeated The Undertaker at WrestleMania 33

The Undertaker has the most impressive record in WrestleMania history, winning 23 of his 25 matches at the event, with his only defeats coming against Brock Lesnar (WrestleMania XXX) and Roman Reigns (WrestleMania 33).

While this might be the most obvious fact of the lot, it’s still worth noting that “The Phenom” has never lost consecutive matches at WrestleMania, which only adds to the intrigue heading into his upcoming match against John Cena (if it takes place, of course).

As for “Big Match John”, his only consecutive losses at “The Show of Shows” came when he lost against The Miz at WrestleMania XXVII and The Rock at WrestleMania XXVIII.

#1 Only The Undertaker has won more WrestleMania matches than John Cena

John Cena has won 10 WrestleMania matches

Other than The Undertaker, John Cena arguably has the best record in WrestleMania history, winning 10 of his 13 matches at the event – a win tally only bettered by “The Deadman”.

Cena was victorious at his first four WrestleMania shows between WrestleMania XX and WrestleMania 23, while he has won his last four matches on “The Grandest Stage of Them All” (vs. The Rock, Bray Wyatt, Rusev and The Miz & Maryse).

He has also left WrestleMania with more major WWE title victories than anybody else, winning either the WWE Championship or the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 21 (vs. JBL), WrestleMania XXV (vs. Edge and Big Show), WrestleMania XXVI (vs. Batista) and WrestleMania 29 (vs. The Rock).
