It’s not unusual for WWE Superstars to return after a lengthy time off from the ring with the use of promos and vignettes, as we recently saw Authors of Pain return to the ring similarly and make an impact on RAW right away.

Sheamus, on the other hand, is a much bigger Superstar whose return should not be wasted by the company. This week on SmackDown, Sheamus, spotting his old look, appeared in a vignette announcing that he'll return soon.

In the vignette, Sheamus expressed his displeasure at the current state of affairs on SmackDown and vowed to put the house back in order. With that, the Celtic Warrior made a simple yet effective statement that may change the course of the entire brand in the coming months.

In this article, we'll look at the 5 possible opponents for Sheamus once he returns to the ring on SmackDown.

#5 Shorty G

One of the men Sheamus referred to during his promo and poked fun at was none other than the newly repackaged Shorty G. The Superstar has proven to be a handy singles competitor after breaking away from his usual tag team pairings and has gotten a massive push in recent times.

Shorty’s stock began to rise after his great performance during the King of the Ring tournament, followed by his feud with King Corbin. If Sheamus is to return as a heel, getting Shorty out of the way would prove to be the perfect return for the mammoth Superstar.

The company could bring back Sheamus as a man who’s there to stop the rise of newer Superstars as he doesn’t see them worthy enough and could take out Shorty first before moving onto other major feuds.

Shorty G is currently red-hot and raring to get into more feuds with top Superstars, which can help increase his popularity. A rivalry with Sheamus will surely help him stay in the spotlight.

#4 Mustafa Ali

Moving on, Mustafa Ali is another man who is similar to Shorty G right now. Ali has played a great babyface character since his move to the main roster and remains a crowd favorite even after suffering several losses.

He’s still seen as a prospect for the company, and they can build him even further by giving him some lengthy feuds against top Superstars, rather than just giving him one-off matches against regular competitors.

With that in mind, Sheamus could use his new character to great effect by returning and taking down the high flying Superstar. Ali is a former 205 Live competitor, so we could watch Sheamus try to send him back to the Cruiserweight division rather than competing in the big leagues.

Sheamus has vowed to restore order on SmackDown, and by that, he could mean he isn’t impressed with the new faces that have entered the Blue brand during his absence.

A feud between Ali and Sheamus would be interesting as they have completely different fighting styles and could lock horns on several occasions, trading victories before Sheamus comes out on top.

#3 Cesaro

Let's not forget about the man who had the biggest impact on his career this decade and helped him develop into one of the finest tag team wrestlers in the business. Cesaro and Sheamus had a rocking feud during the second half of 2016, and even though the feud lasted for several months, it never got boring.

Keeping that in mind, Sheamus may return to hunt down his former archrival and best friend Cesaro. The two men managed to win five Tag Team Championships together, and that number will help the company construct a great new feud around them.

Currently, Cesaro doesn’t have much to do on SmackDown and is generously used in multi-men matches to take the pinfall. If Sheamus returns and reignites a feud with his former partner, we could see one of the two men turn face, with Cesaro finding a new direction.

Cesaro is in dire need of something that can make him a top Superstar in the company again, and he could work well with Sheamus, as both men have excellent chemistry, with fans already aware of the connection they have.

#2 King Corbin

Another man Sheamus called out during his return promo on Friday night was the man who recently got crowned the King of the Ring, Baron Corbin. Sheamus won the King of the Ring tournament in 2010, and enjoyed his time as monarch, but mocked the current King in his promo.

Sheamus wants to set the bar high on WWE SmackDown once again, and the only way he can do that is by taking on the biggest competitors and showing them how it’s done. King Corbin is one of the biggest athletes SmackDown has, and he could prove to be a great opponent for Sheamus once he returns.

It is interesting to note here that Corbin and Sheamus have never had singles matches against each other before, and this could make a great fresh booking for the Blue brand and give fans something that's not repetitive.

Corbin has laid himself down to put many Superstars over in recent months without losing much credibility, and he could do so once again for Sheamus, which will make a great storyline.

Sheamus will be looking to climb the ladder as quickly as possible, and engaging in a feud with Corbin early on will make his rise to the upper card even quicker.

#1 Shinsuke Nakamura

Sheamus could get right down to business as soon as he returns to the squared circle. He could do this by coming face to face with Sami Zayn, fast-tracking his way into the Intercontinental Championship scene in the process.

Sheamus has won several titles in his career, and the Intercontinental Championship is the only major championship missing from his treasure chest. He could score the title in his first return feud to make a big impact, and run through the Blue brand’s roster from then on.

Shinsuke Nakamura is currently paired with Cesaro, a Superstar who has been Sheamus’ best friend in the past, and we could also see The Swiss Cyborg abandon Nakamura and help Sheamus get back to the top of the roster.

It seems like Sheamus has his sights set on ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt as well, and we’ve heard rumors that Wyatt could be in for a major match for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 36.

Apart from Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns, Sheamus is one believable opponent for The Fiend, so we could see WWE take that direction for the Superstar if he manages to make a good impact upon his return.
