5 perfect decisions made at WWE Royal Rumble 2018

A Wrestlemania sign-pointing without boos in the background! Is it real life?

A gloriously phenomenal PPV came to a conclusion this past week. One of the best PPVs in recent times, Royal Rumble 2018 is definitely going down in history books for all the right reasons.

WWE's notorious tendency to overbook a PPV with unnecessary stuff (case in point being Survivor Series 2017), has never pleased anyone in their fanbase. A simple formula for both the marquee matches made the Royal Rumble a thoroughly enjoyable PPV.

We look at five major decisions made by WWE which paid fine dividends at the Royal Rumble.

#5 Styles wins amidst controversy

The phenomenal champion of WWE, AJ Styles, continued his second run with the title at Royal Rumble. Styles overcame masssive odds to notch a dominant victory over Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens. A fun opener to the night, the match delivered and had the perfect finish.

Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn were competing in their first ever WWE Championship match, and WWE did a good job of presenting the two highly talented superstars as legitimate threats to the title.

AJ Styles winning is definitely 'best for business' heading into WrestleMania season.

#4 The Uso Penitentiary keeps going strong

Welcome to the USO penitentiary!
Welcome to the Uso penitentiary!

The Usos are the best tag-team in the world today. Not one of the best, but hands-down the best team in the world. One of the best tweener characters in WWE, with promo skills Attitude Era legends will be proud of, and in-ring work which can make the audience go crazy!

A 2-out-of-3 falls match has always unfolded in the same fashion in WWE. Either a babyface rallies to win the match, or the heels dominate and take the third fall. Not in this case! The Usos surprisingly won with two straight falls!

The Usos are one of the best things in WWE today, and this could finally be the year when they make it to the WrestleMania main-card!

#3 The New Era is here

Royal Rumble 2016 was a fine match. Except, there were at least six great younger superstars who had to lay in the ring for quite some time, just to be thrown out by older stars like Lesnar, Goldberg and The Undertaker.

This year was different and it was for the best. Everyone from Rusev to Elias to Finn Balor, got a great platform to showcase their talent. For the first time in many years, the winner was not booed heavily.

WWE need to realise sooner rather than later that they cannot rely on Attitude Era superstars to make events memorable anymore. A beautiful song by Elias on Rusev Day is enough to make the crowd happy!

#2 Proper surprises

BOOYAKA BOOYAKA!
Booyaka Booyaka!

The whole drama about Royal Rumble revolves around its surprises. You never know who will enter next! The last two years saw a fall in the surprise entrants count, but WWE made proper amends for it this year.

Rey Mysterio, The Hurricane, Adam Cole (BayBay!) and the NXT champion, Andrade Almas, were well-kept surprises and led to a massive cheer from the Philly crowd. The Women's Rumble was not short on surprises either, and delivered in a big way.

Royal Rumble is known for its unpredictability. Thank you WWE, for keeping it the same way!

#1 History indeed

The Women's Revolution is often felt forced and shoved down the throats of WWE fans. The announcement of a Women's Royal Rumble, followed by weekly reminders about how history was about to be made, was not a pleasant sight.

However, the women of WWE shocked us all and delivered a stellar hour of action, which was great in every way possible. An exciting mix of current and former superstars, unlikely face-offs and friendly reunions made the Women's Rumble match a historical match indeed.

WWE need to make sure that they make the whole Women's Revolution thing a more natural evolution, rather than forced in nature. Such matches are definitely going to help the cause.
