5 possible opponents for John Cena in 2019

Who could step up to Cena next year?

This week on Raw, Vince McMahon was in his Santa Clause attire, and ready to spread happiness around the WWE Universe, and if WWE really wanted to spread happiness, they could start by making Raw a watchable show again.

Anyway, McMahon announced some huge revelations on Raw, and one of them was the news that John Cena will return to the WWE soon.

Moreover, McMahon announced that Cena is still a free agent who can rotate from Raw to SmackDown Live, so this opens up a lot of possibilities for superstars, storylines, and pay-per-views, as Cena is arguably WWE's biggest draw right now.

So who could face him when he returns?

#1 Dean Ambrose

Dean Ambrose's heel turn has been disappointing so far, as WWE has really destroyed the immense heat that came from his shocking heel turn on Seth Rollins. Even though Ambrose is the IC Champion, his reign doesn't feel that important, as WWE has dropped the ball on that as well.

The solution to this problem could be WWE booking a strong opponent for Ambrose, and that could be John Cena.

Cena and Ambrose had quite the rivalry in the past, but it was never fully explored, now that Ambrose is a heel, he and Cena could go at it, as Cena could be looking to capture the one title that has eluded him for so long.

#2 Lars Sullivan

Lars Sullivan is a huge prospect for WWE, as men of his size usually go far in Vince McMahon's ring. Sullivan's size is not the only thing he has going for him, as his in-ring ability and somewhat decent character work were appreciated in NXT.

The only way for WWE to get Sullivan off to the right start on Raw or SmackDown Live is to have him face-off against the biggest star in the company.

Cena vs Sullivan may not be a match many would scream for, but it is a match we all know is coming down the road, as Sullivan could be the new big guy on the roster, and who better to guide him than Cena?

#3 Drew McIntyre

The fact that Drew McIntyre is not already in the main event is a surprise, as he is the most consistent star on Raw these days, his character work, his ring ability, and overall aura are so well put together that it's hard to imagine him not winning the world title someday.

And the superstar that could give McIntyre the push into main event superstardom is non-other than John Cena, Cena vs McIntyre could be feud of the year if WWE book it properly, as these two men are polar opposites who would thrive against each other.

McIntyre needs that nudge to be known as the main man on Raw, and Cena could do that for him.

#4 Daniel Bryan

It is almost a certainty that when Cena returns to the WWE, he is coming straight to the main event, and why shouldn't he?

WWE needs to draw in fans for their biggest pay-per-views, and Cena is the man people want to watch.

Moreover, with his Hollywood career taking off quite nicely, it is certain that Cena is more popular than ever, and him going for his 17th world title is a possibility that has to be expected.

And it is possible that Cena could be the man to take on Daniel Bryan next year, and while some may protest it, this could be a rivalry that brings out the best in Bryan, and propels the WWE title back to the main event.

#5 Samoa Joe

Samoa Joe is arguably the most underrated superstar in WWE right now, as most people and WWE themselves don't appreciate what this man can do on the mic and in the ring.

While Joe is an ageing ass kicker at this point in his career, he still has the same fire he had in his younger days, and WWE would be fools for not trying to bring out the best in Joe once again.

Cena vs Joe is a rivalry that needs to happen, as Joe has been held back by WWE in his previous dream matches with the likes of AJ Styles and Daniel Bryan, but with Cena, Joe can be the machine he truly is.
