5 reasons why Becky Lynch vs Ronda Rousey should be the main event at WrestleMania 35

It was what most fans wanted - a match between Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania 35. The pair were supposed to face each other at Survivor Series, and the buildup to that match was epic in its own right (more on that later).

However, in the end Lynch had to drop out from the match as a precautionary measure for a concussion she had a few days earlier. As a result, Charlotte Flair took her place, much to the disappointment of the fans.

Ever since then, they had clamoured for this match to happen, and their prayers were answered as Lynch chose Rousey as her opposition for WrestleMania 35.

All is now right and fine with the world, but there is just one thing for this to reach perfection: the match between the Baddest Woman on the Planet and The Man should be the main event at the grandest stage of them all.

Here are five reasons why.

#5 Huge buildup

The buildup to this match began prior to Survivor Series in November 2018. While the usual bragging on the mic is a very common thing wrestlers do, Lynch took it to another level when she, along with some other SmackDown women wrestlers, invaded RAW as a means to make a statement.

Lynch ultimately had to pay for it as Nia Jax knocked her out with a punch during a major in-ring fracas, making her suffer from a concussion which subsequently ruled her out of the main match at Survivor Series.

However, not before she attacked Rousey in her own yard, locked her in a dis-arm-her, and made her writhe in pain. It was the boiling point of the feud between the two, but it didn’t get the release point it should have.

With so much emotional and storyline investment in this feud, a main event spot at Mania is what this feud deserves.

#4 A heel who is cheered

Becky is always cheered

For many, Becky Lynch can’t be dubbed as a heel since she is loved so much. However, whether you like it or not, Lynch turned heel the moment she attacked Charlotte Flair after their title match at SummerSlam.

She might have been cheered at the time as well, but it is worth noting that Flair was her friend in the storyline, and she turned on her. By definition, this is a pure heel turn.

However, the positive reaction she got from the crowd made WWE push her as somewhat of an anti-hero who was fighting for her own rights. This gave more credibility to Lynch’s 'The Man' gimmick.

The rest, as they say, is history. The pop the Irishwoman gets every time she enters the arena is a testament to how much the WWE Universe loves her gimmick. Even though she is a heel, she is cheered by almost everyone – not many wrestlers in the history of WWE can boast about that.

#3 A face who is booed

When Ronda Rousey first joined the WWE, she was welcomed with open arms. She got huge pops every time she was in front of the crowd, and the WWE Universe absolutely adored the former UFC women bantamweight champion.

However, the Rousey spark faded off after a while. One can’t be sure as to when it exactly happened, but what is known is the reason behind it. As good an athlete she is, her mic skills are far from convincing. As a result, her promos are not entirely top notch.

She has come quite some way on that front, but her feud with Lynch further pushed her down in the eyes of the fans. After Charlotte Flair gave her a massive beat-down at Survivor Series, fans instead of being sympathetic to her ordeal, started chanting Becky’s name.

Nowadays, it is not uncommon to witness fans boo her in arenas. And this is a supposed babyface we are talking about.

So, a babyface who is booed versus a heel who is cheered – both massive anomalies – & unique enough to be worthy of the main event spot at WrestleMania.

#2 A good in-ring match and lack of alternatives

Lynch is a superb in-ring performer

The thing with Becky Lynch is that she is not only superb on the mic, but is also one of the best in-ring performers in the company. She is agile, and is technically brilliant inside the ring.

Meanwhile, Ronda Rousey is a former UFC fighter and a natural athlete. Some might criticize her for botching moves here and there, thereby endangering her opponents by putting them at a real risk of getting injured, but she has improved a lot in terms of being safe inside the ring.

As a result, a match between these two is almost guaranteed to not only be entertaining due to the storyline efforts and emotional investment embedded in it, but will also wow the fans in terms of the quality of wrestling.

The only alternative to this is the match between Seth Rollins and Brock Lesnar, or someone against The Undertaker. In the former’s case, a part-timer shouldn’t be headlining WrestleMania and in the case of the latter, The Undertaker just isn’t the in-ring performer he once was.

#1 First women's main event match

Let the women's revolution take over
Let the women's revolution take over

In WWE’s long and illustrious existence, there has never been a WrestleMania headlined by women. It is 2019, and this needs to change.

Let it be clear that headlining with women just for the sake of it is not what I am endorsing. Instead, I am advocating what the current women’s wrestling division deserves.

Fans might look fondly towards the long-gone Attitude Era as being the best years of WWE, but when it comes to the women’s division, there hasn’t been a time better than this.

In today’s roster, there are fine wrestlers who have revolutionized women’s wrestling, and Becky Lynch is one of those entertainers that deserve a lot of credit.

The Irish superstar is the face of the women’s division, and WWE in general – so this is the best time for a WrestleMania event to be headlined by the hottest performer in sports entertainment right now.
