Survivor Series was a strange event, from start to finish. RAW made a clean sweep, picking up wins in all the matches. SmackDown looked like the inferior brand in every encounter. The Charlotte Flair vs. Ronda Rousey match is especially of interest.
Charlotte Flair hit Ronda Rousey with a kendo stick towards the end of what was a great match. Both women gave it their all and put on a show to remember. And then, Charlotte Flair just lost her mind.
She obviously went heel laying down an epic beat down on Ronda Rousey, even after she was disqualified. The whole world has been asking why, Charlotte, why?
Let me try and attempt to answer the question in this post-event feature.
#5 To get viewers to tune in to SmackDown Live again
Let's just say that Survivor Series was a RAW show, from start to finish. Every talking point that emerged from the show will lead to interesting tidings on the red brand. Nothing of note happened with regard to the blue brand at all.
By having Charlotte Flair turn heel, fans will tune in to the next episode of SmackDown Live, to find out what happened. Bear in mind that TV ratings haven't been the best in recent times and WWE needs fans to tune in constantly, especially because SmackDown Live will be on FOX next year. Flair should explain her actions on the blue brand and I'm sure you're just as curious as I am to find out exactly why she snapped.
Of course, there's always the possibility that Flair goes the Ambrose way and does not explain her actions. But people will tune in, to find out the reason regardless.
#4 To set up a rematch
Ronda Rousey really has no viable opponents on RAW right now. Yes, I know that she will face Nia Jax very soon indeed, but that match somehow doesn't feel very big. In my estimation, both of her big money feuds are with opponents on SmackDown Live. With Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch.
Let's assume for a minute that Becky Lynch vs. Ronda Rousey is the plan for the WrestleMania 35 main event. This essentially means that we won't see the Charlotte Flair vs. Ronda Rousey match for a while. But whatever the case may be, fans will want yet another match based on what just happened at Survivor Series.
Maybe both women appear on the same brand following WrestleMania 35. That could lead to a future clash between the two talented women. The stage is already set for the match.
#3 Possible Horsewomen vs. Horsewomen match
Shayna Baszler has been dominating NXT with her performances lately. At NXT TakeOver: WarGames, we also saw Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke come out to ringside, to support their good friend. WWE has teased a Horsewomen vs. Horsewomen match in the past. Could this be the stage for the ultimate clash?
Rousey could call upon Duke, Shafir and Baszler to take on Becky, Charlotte, Sasha and Bayley. Maybe this match could be the main event for the next Evolution pay-per-view event, next year. The seeds have already been sown and it remains to be seen how this angle bears fruit.
The main problem with this is that Duke and Shafir aren't professional wrestlers yet. But this could change by the time that Evolution comes around next year.
I can't wait for this potential dream match.
#2 To not have Charlotte suffer a clean defeat
Daniel Bryan suffered a clean loss to Brock Lesnar in the main event of Survivor Series, after a very competitive match. Obviously, Lesnar has been portrayed as the more dominant champion, in this particular case. However, WWE has always protected Charlotte Flair and this heel turn could have been a means to do so.
By having her lose by pinfall, she would have lost some of her sheen. By having her tap out on pay-per-view, she would have felt a lot less special than the way she's been portrayed. The SmackDown Live women's division revolves around Charlotte Flair after all.
Remember that this is the same woman that ended Asuka's undefeated streak at WrestleMania 34, this year. Charlotte has always been portrayed as a special performer and this heel turn protected her.
#1 Because Becky Lynch is organically turning face
Yes, we may be in for a double turn very soon indeed. Let's assume for a while that WWE decides to listen to its fans and make Becky Lynch a babyface. Whom can she feud with on SmackDown Live, as a face character? Carmella? The IIconics? Mandy Rose?
The fact of the matter is that Becky needs to feud against Charlotte Flair because she's the only real, believable opponent right now. Asuka has lost too much of her sheen and is currently a babyface. The same can be said for Naomi, who isn't the Naomi of old.
So, in my mind, a double turn could be in the works. And Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair could exchange roles during their exceptional Evolution rematch, whenever it happens.
