5 reasons why John Cena should turn heel in 2018

John Cena has been the face of WWE for around 15 years. He may have started his career as an obnoxious heel, but WWE realized the potential of The Franchise and turned him into a babyface. Cena has since then gone on to become the most popular face in WWE history and has become one of the most consistent performers of the past two decades.

Cena's run as a top babyface was much loved by wrestling fans during the 2000s. But with performers like AJ Styles and Roman Reigns gaining ranks as faces day by day, Cena has just become plain and stale. The character which made John Cena who he is today now gets booed with "John Cena Sucks" chants.

Cena is not the top merchandise selling artist anymore. Maybe it's because the fans have become tired of his heroic persona, and expect a change of character from The Champ.

A heel turn for John Cena will surely get a positive response from the WWE Universe as a revamp in his character will bring the best out of him. 2018 is the perfect time to pull the trigger and turn John Cena heel. Here are five reasons in support of this statement.

#5 Boring babyface character

His character needs a fresh start.
His character needs a fresh start.

John Cena has been a babyface for over ten years. His character hasn’t evolved for over a decade. Cena needs to turn heel because he’s been stale as a face for far too long.

John has become so clean cut that fans have started turning on him. The WWE Universe appears to like its superstars a little dirty, someone who's always not adhering to Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect.

Remember how Hulk Hogan's heel turn was received with loud cheers from the fans? Cena's situation is no different. A change from his politically correct and children-friendly attitude to a cockier badass will make him the hottest star in WWE once again.

#4 The spot for the top heel is open

Who doesn't want a heel Dr, Thuganomics?

WWE is in dire need of top heels. The company hardly boasts of any credible main event villains today. Superstars like Edge, CM Punk, and Chris Jericho made a name for themselves by portraying a heel character to perfection.

Sure, stars like Kevin Owens and The Miz are great as heels, but they are upper mid carders who are occasionally brought up to the main event level. John Cena is anyway booed out of the arena everytime he steps into the ring. A heel turn will justify those boos and set him up as the topmost villain of WWE.

With Brock Lesnar rumored to leave WWE and Samoa Joe still sidelined due to injury, a heel John Cena can easily feud with top babyfaces like Finn Balor and Seth Rollins and elevate them to become future superstars, or even challenge and win his #17 World title.

#3 Goes well with his part-time status

Not a full-time wrestler anymore.
Not a full-time wrestler anymore.

Since losing to Roman Reigns at No Mercy last year, Cena has ceased to appear as a full-time performer. He does perform some house shows and live events, but not up to the level of wrestlers like Reigns and AJ Styles.

With Cena having a number of opportunities on his hands apart from WWE, he seems ready to take a lesser role in the company. If that means a heel role that allows him to work two or three major storylines a year, he should do it and do it well.

A heel turn for Cena and the subsequent reason for the role change will go down as one of the most shocking angles in WWE history.

#2 Putting over younger talent

John Cena is infamously known for burying young talent. His run during the 2000s may have caused several fellow wrestlers getting overlooked, but recently The Cenation Leader has been putting a few stars like Elias, Kevin Owens over him, which was a welcoming change for the WWE Universe.

The best way to get a babyface over with the crowd is by having a top-level heel put him over. Cena as a babyface putting a younger performer over doesn't seem very convincing. If WWE wants to turn John Cena heel, now would be the best time.

WWE has had an influx of indie wrestling talent in the company who are waiting to get the main event spot, and a heelish John Cena would be the perfect person to do the honors. Anyway, Cena has nothing to lose, as he's already one of the most accomplished wrestlers in WWE history.

#1 He's not the top babyface anymore

John Cena was the most polarising figure in the WWE, but not anymore. A younger superstar named Roman Reigns has taken his position as the top babyface of the company.

From main-eventing WrestleMania thrice in a row to winning the Grand Slam Championship in a very short duration of time, Roman Reigns has become the new poster boy of WWE.

Thus, as for Cena, he can now move on from his innocent "goody-two-shoes Superman" character and transform into an out-and-out bad guy.

The WWE truly needs to shift gears and add a new dimension to Cena's persona.

It will surely be best for business.
