It was supposed to be Mustafa Ali’s biggest break in the WWE. The newcomer was scheduled to take part in the Elimination Chamber match alongside AJ Styles, Randy Orton, Jeff Hardy, Samoa Joe and WWE champion Daniel Bryan for the title.

However, an injury has forced him to quit the event and Kofi Kingston was chosen in his stead. The New Day faction member participated in a Gauntlet match to determine the order of entry at the Elimination Chamber match and put in perhaps his greatest ever performance for WWE.

He began his fight beating Daniel Bryan with a Trouble in Paradise and then eliminated Jeff Hardy with an SOS. After that, he also beat Samoa Joe, who couldn’t take his defeat kindly and launched a brutal attack on Kingston after losing to him.

Nevertheless, Kingston held his own against AJ Styles but couldn’t overcome the Phenomenal One, who locked in a Calf Crusher to make Kingston submit. The New Day superstar fought for over an hour and showed why he deserves a title shot.

But that’s just not it – he should win the title and here are 5 reasons why…

#5 A phenomenal athlete

Earlier, I had written on why Samoa Joe should win the title but at the time, Kingston wasn’t a part of the Elimination Chamber. With him on board, everything changes. The superstar is among the best athletes and he showed just that in the Gauntlet match.

He was so, so good that everyone in the arena was awestruck with his performance. When he was beaten by AJ Styles, the spectators in the arena gave him a standing ovation, such was the quality he oozed

Kingston has always been an amazing in-ring performer. He always makes his opponents look good and does the most dangerous manoeuvres with the utmost ease.

#4 A great entertainer

When Kofi Kingston joined WWE just a little over 10 years ago, he came to the party as a Jamaican. He had a fake accent and the laid-back nature easy-going nature that Jamaicans are so famous for. It was a very highly entertaining gimmick.

Even though he has dropped that gig, he still remains one of the most entertaining people in the company. There is a reason why the New Day faction is so loved as the entertainment quality that they ooze out is just fabulous.

To be a hit in the WWE, a performer needs to be good on the mic. Most of the legendary wrestlers are deemed as legends due to their ability to cut promos. In this regard, Kingston excels due to his natural ability to entertain the crowd with his words.

Simply put, he ticks all the boxes to hold the most prestigious championship in WWE.

#3 Loyal

Kofi Kingston’s loyalty to WWE can never be questioned. Despite being one of the best performers in the company – coupled with the fact that he was very over back in 2010 – he never laid hands on the major title in the company.

He did get some shots at it but it ended there. In the meantime, he won the United States championship, the Intercontinental title and also tag team titles but the WWE title kept eluding him.

Given that he is one of the most talented performers in the company, he should have already won the WWE title at least once. Unfortunately, however, he hasn’t. There have been so many wrestlers who left WWE for greener pastures but Kingston, despite the constant snubs, stayed with the company.

The Ghanaian just loves the WWE and it is about time that his unparalleled loyalty is rewarded with a championship belt.

#2 Long overdue

It is about time
It is about time

Kofi Kingston has been in the WWE for over 10 years. 10 years – that is over a decade at one place without reaching the pinnacle despite having what it takes to do so. In that time frame, WWE have had numerous title changes but never did it fall in Kingston’s hand.

Since Kingston’s debut, The Shield heroes Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose not only debuted but have held the WWE/Universal championship at least once each.

The Undertaker retired Shawn Michaels, CM Punk kicked Jeff Hardy out of Friday Night SmackDown, CM Punk himself left after a title reign of 434 days, a part-timer Brock Lesnar also held the Universal title for 434 days, Shawn Michaels came out of retirement to take on the Brothers of Destruction while representing DX with Triple H… the list goes on and on.

But Kingston has always been overlooked. And it is about time that changes.

#1 He deserves the Grand Slam

There are only a handful of wrestlers who have the honour of being labelled as Grand Slam winners. The current requirement to achieve that honour is to win the following championships at least once: United States championship, Intercontinental championship, RAW or SmackDown Tag Team championship and WWE or Universal championship.

In the current roster, all the Shield members hold this accolade alongside Kurt Angle, The Miz, Randy Orton, and Daniel Bryan. Kingston, meanwhile, is only one title short of reaching the Grand Slam status.

And we all know what that is: the WWE championship.

Should he win in the Elimination Chamber match – which WWE should seriously consider after the reaction Kingston got from the fans – he would join the elite company of wrestlers who have won it all.

And he really, really deserves it.
