Why did WWE never follow up on Roman Reigns and Vince McMahon?

Remember when Roman Reigns originally came over to SmackDown in the Superstar Shakeup? Not only was the move unheard of at the time, especially with Reigns being one of the company's biggest stars, it set a precedent for what the company was willing to do to make the blue brand more successful.

Roman Reigns started off his run on the blue brand by sucker punching Vince McMahon, but for some reason, they never followed up. Sure, WWE did have Shane McMahon act as Vince's surrogate in the situation and vowed to avenge his father, but that still didn't give it the same impact that it would have had with Vince, especially with the elder McMahon's star power exceeding his son's by a longshot. Vince didn't have to wrestle -- but why was he completely taken off camera and out of the story?

Beyond all that, Reigns handing out a Superman punch out of nowhere felt like a very heelish move, which was also never explored. Why WWE wouldn't at least try to make him an antihero in this case is odd, but the biggest hole in the entire situation was the complete omission of Vince McMahon.
