Kevin Nash and Shawn Michaels might be really good friends in real life, but as all of HBK's friends know, you don't turn your back on The Showstopper. That was one lesson that Diesel would have done well to remember at the 1996 Royal Rumble, but unfortunately, he was not ready.

In 1995, Shawn Michaels had done the unthinkable and had come out at #1 in the Royal Rumble to win the entire match despite that, outlasting every other Superstar. Thus, with one win already having come the previous year, it was not really expected that Michaels would win 1996 Royal Rumble again, although Hulk Hogan had won two back-to-back Rumbles before. But... that's Hulk Hogan.

This time, Michaels came out at the inconspicuous number of 18 and then continued to wrestle. He did not really feature as one of the main highlights of the event, and no one really thought that he would win.

With only four men left in the ring, it was The British Bulldog, Kama, Diesel, and Shawn Michaels. While Diesel was busy with Kama, Michaels was able to eliminate The Bulldog. However, when Diesel finally pushed Kama over the top rope, his old friend was ready behind him and hit him with the Superkick, which sent him tumbling over the ropes as he was eliminated.
