5 worst storylines in WWE in recent times

Mae Young Mark Henry

We are at present going through one of the best storylines of the PG era. Though in some parts, it looks like the remake of the old corporation, watching WWE for the past few weeks has been really entertaining and exciting.

Pro-wrestling and WWE in particular has a big fan base, mainly because of its storyline. The fact that this is a scripted sport requires writers to come up with something that indulges people into watching the show week after week.

Unlike MMA and other contact sport where a simple match between two top fighters can draw viewers and television ratings, WWE has to work on building a storyline that involves the wrestlers.

Over the years, WWE has come up with a variety of storylines based on various subjects, both mainstream and controversial. Though mainstream storylines do still exist, it is the controversial ones involving sensitive topics that always garner the most attention for both the right and wrong reasons.

Most of the time, WWE manages to keep things under a limit and make sure that the storylines do not bring out an emotional conflict with the fans. However, there are instances where storylines have brought out disgust from fans.

Here, we will look at some storylines that were completely weird and can be deemed the worst storylines WWE has come up with:

5. Mae Young and Mark Henry

Remember when Mark Henry was known as the ‘Sexual Chocolate’? During that time, he had a story with a 70-year-old Mae Young.

According to this storyline, Henry was in love with Young and after hanging out with her, he got her pregnant. Later in RAW’s 1000th episode she went into labour, and gave birth to a hand.

This storyline was one of the most outright ridiculous ones you will ever get to see on screen. Wonder who writes such garbage for WWE!

4. Dawn Marie and Al Wilson

Dawn Marie was in a feud with Torrie Wilson in 2001 after the invasion storyline. This storyline was confusing and to an extent, disgusting.

According to the storyline, Dawn Marie had developed feelings for Torrie and seduced Torrie’s dad Al Wilson to get to her.

Dawn and Wilson then got married and after a love making session during their honeymoon, Wilson accidentally got killed.

Torrie then fights her cruel stepmother in several episodes of SmackDown and the male fans were given a treat to watch as these wrestlers clad in minimal clothing were involved in cat fights throughout their feud.

The entire storyline was very badly written and acted, and hence can be considered one of the worst storylines in WWE.

3. Vince’s illegitimate son

Hornswoggle

Anything that involves Hornswoggle can be considered a bad storyline, and things went pretty overboard when Vince involved Hornswoggle in a storyline where he was considered Vince’s illegitimate son.

It was later revealed by JBL that Finlay was the real father of Hornswoggle and JBL then assaulted Hornswoggle in his hospital bed.

The funny thing about this storyline was that it managed to last more than four months. How did WWE not realize that no one was ever interested in such a meaningless story and kept moving on with it until they finally managed to end it after WrestleMania?

2. Exploiting Eddie Guerrero’s death

Eddie’s death was one of the most shocking moments in the history of WWE. Fans were left stunned as their favourite star was no more. WWE however considered this an opportunity to make a storyline and cash in on it.

Rey Mysterio, Edge and Vickie Guerrero were involved in a feud that used Eddie’s death as feul. Chavo apparently was upset with Mysterio who he thought was living in the shadow of his brother.

Chavo said that Eddie should have put him over rather than Rey, thus triggering the feud between the two. Though the storyline doesn’t sound bad till now, things took a real disgraceful turn when Eddie’s real life widow Vickie Guerrero was brought into the picture.

Vickie and WWE stooped really low as they used Eddie’s death as a tool for a heel turn as Vickie sided with Chavo in the storyline.

Eddie’s fans were so disgusted by how low a company could get to make money. Even Vickie Guerrero didn’t seem fazed by the fact that her husband and a respected man’s image was being tarnished to this extent.

1. The Katie Vick storyline

It’s not a surprise that this made it to the top of the list, as it’s one of the most horrible storylines one might have ever come across. It always makes me wonder who could even write something so remorseless.

The storyline began with Triple H accusing Kane of murdering his girlfriend Katie Vick 10 years back. He said Kane had been drunk driving with her on the passenger seat with him and the accident killed her. Plus, Kane was so remorseless that he made love with the corpse of his girlfriend.

Triple H proved this particular part of the story by disguising himself as Kane and enacted having sex with a mannequin placed in a casket. He then brought the same mannequin and examined it to find proof that Kane was indeed guilty.

The act was so disgusting that it made me want to quit watching WWE, which I did for a while. This was clearly the time when WWE was spiralling downwards after reaching the peak during the Attitude Era.
