5 WWE betrayals that broke fan's hearts

Soon to be betrayed
Soon to be betrayed

Betrayals are part and parcel of WWE.

The easiest way to create a compelling rivalry between Superstars is to have one turn on the other.

Hell hath no fury like a WWE Superstar betrayed.

However, not all betrayals inspire the same feelings in the fans.

Sometimes, what the WWE wants to look like betrayal looks like a righteous babyface stepping out of the shadow of her opportunistic, whining, entitled friend; claiming what is rightfully hers. The WWE can try to spin it any way that they want to, but all I saw was Charlotte Flair taking advantage of her so-called best friend in order to steal her spotlight. Again. I was overjoyed when Becky Lynch stood up for herself and proved that bullies don't prosper. As far as I and many fans were concerned, the only betrayal that took place was Charlotte Flair betraying Becky Lynch. Yes, I am very biased, and I absolutely boo the woo.

Sometimes, what the WWE wants to look like betrayal looks like betrayal, but nobody really cares. This is because they are likely not invested in the wrestlers as a team. As such, there is no emotional response. I can't recall the circumstances of these betrayals clearly; probably because they had so little impact on me. I think Shad Gaspard betrayed JTG maybe?

Sometimes, we see betrayals coming from a mile away. Somebody needs to let Ronda Rousey know that one or both of Natalya and Nikki Bella are going to betray her.

These five betrayals are different. Apart from one, we never saw any of them coming. And all of them broke our hearts. As the saying goes, they got us "right in the feels"

#5 Worst Rusev Day Ever

Why Aiden? Why?

Say it ain't so, Aiden. Say it ain't so.

The wound is still fresh. It's painful to even type this. I keep wishing that it isn't true, but it happened.

This past week on Smackdown, Aiden English, the songbird of Rusev Day, betrayed the Lion of Bulgaria, Rusev, attacking him after his United States Championship loss to Shinsuke Nakamura.

It was doubly shocking because this horrendous act took place on Rusev Day.

#4 Hulk Hogan betrays WCW

NWO...for life
NWO...for life

"Hulk Hogan has betrayed WCW."

Thus spake Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan at WCW's Bash at the Beach, 1996.

For months, WCW had been terrorized by Scott Hall and Kevin Nash, the outsiders. They would interrupt scheduled matches to beat up the participants, attack wrestlers backstage, and do whatever they could to cause as much chaos as possible.

And so it came to pass that at Bash at the Beach, they took on the team of Sting, Randy Savage, and Lex Luger. For weeks, the Outsiders had been promising the reveal of a third man. Everyone speculated as to who it was.

The answer was truly shocking.

Hulk Hogan.

The same man who was a hero to millions, the same man who implored children to take their vitamins and say their prayers, the same Real American, was now standing in the ring with the Outsiders, having turned his back on WCW, and the fans.

It was pure bedlam. The crowd was so upset that they threw garbage into the ring. Some even tried to rush it. They were angry, and they made their displeasure known. And who could blame them?

The unfathomable had happened; Hulk Hogan had gone over to the dark side.

#3 Tommaso Ciampa

If you don't watch NXT, you likely don't know about this betrayal. That makes you one of the lucky ones.

Save yourself the anguish; move on to the next slide.

Go on.

There is only pain here.

Still here? Okay.

Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano were best friends, they were tag-team partners, they were #DIY. They had scraped and clawed just to be signed by the WWE. And then, all their hard work began to pay off. They won the NXT Tag Team Championships. They were one of the best tag-teams in the world. They were beloved by audiences everywhere. All of their dreams were coming true. And the best part? They did it all together.

They eventually lost their championships, but it was okay. They were still living the dream. They were getting a rematch. And most importantly, they had each other.

The year was 2017, the scene; NXT Takeover: Chicago. All they had to do was defeat two hulking brutes, the Authors of Pain, in a ladder match.

Easier said than done. Long story short, #DIY lost despite a valiant effort.

But it was okay. You win together, you lose together. Their bond had never been stronger. At one point in the match, Johnny Gargano actually pushed Tommasso Ciampa out of the way of a ladder shot and took it himself. He literally sacrificed his own welfare for his friend.

His reward? A sickening assault by Ciampa.

By the end of it, Johnny Gargano looked both heartbroken and confused. As did all of us who watched it.

#2 Bray Wyatt turns his back on his family

Luke who?
Luke who?

We've all been there before.

Have you ever had a friend who made a new friend, and suddenly forgot all about you?

Now just imagine for a moment that you're a deranged cult-leader, and have been trying to force a man to join your cult by constantly beating him to a pulp. He finally acquiesces but is only really playing a long-con in order to destroy your cult from within. All the while, your loyal follower who has been with you since day one, suspects this man of doing this very thing, and constantly points this out to you when things go wrong.

This is the situation Bray Wyatt found himself in in late 2016, early 2017.

What did he do? Who did he choose? Would he side with his loyal subject, Luke Harper? Or would he favour his shiny new toy, Randy Orton?

As it turned out, Bray Wyatt did not stop to consider that beating a man to a pulp on a weekly basis may lead to the said man wanting to take revenge. Even though Daniel Bryan had already used the same ruse as Randy Orton had. Even when the said man had a history of falling out with his cohorts, and was nicknamed The Viper. Y'know; the snake.

Anyway, after yet another spell of bickering between Orton and Harper, it looked as though they would come to blows. Rather than solve this problem in a calm and rational manner, Bray's solution was to punch Harper and force him and Orton to fight the next week. Then, after Harper lost, Bray attacked him, essentially excommunicating him from the Wyatt Family.

Now was Harper perfect? Absolutely not. He was a vile, vicious man. But he had always been loyal to Bray. It isn't easy work being a cult-leader's henchman. But did Harper ever complain? No. He did his job. He kidnapped people. He fought at the behest of his leader. And he never complained.

He deserved a lot of things. But he didn't deserve to lose his family.

#1 Plan B: Seth Rollins destroys the Shield

The chair-shot heard around the world
The chair-shot heard around the world

Is there anything left to say that hasn't already been said?

No amount of editorializing will truly do justice to the heinousness of this action, so I'll just give you the facts.

The Shield were a band of brothers who could not be beaten, bullied, or corrupted. The reason? Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns had each other's backs no matter what.

They were riding high after defeating Evolution in back-to-back pay-per-view matches. Let that sink in for a moment. They had defeated a team comprising of Triple H, Batista, Randy Orton, and they did it twice. The second time was in an elimination match where not even a single member of the Shield was eliminated. These men had a combined 32 World Championships between them. And they had no answer for the Shield.

Triple H's solution? He offered a member of the Shield the world; all he had to do was betray his brothers.

Seth Rollins swung a steel chair at the back of Roman Reigns.

Dean Ambrose's look of disbelieving shock mirrored those of millions worldwide.

Seth Rollins swung a steel chair at the back of Dean Ambrose.

Triple H was right. There is always a plan B.

Even if it is selling your soul to the devil.
