5 WWE Divas pushes that ended in failure

There have been multiple instances of WWE pushing superstars to the clouds before realizing that the audience do not like someone being forced down their throats. While there are more instances of this on the men's roster, we have seen quite a few pushes on the women's division ending in failure as well.

Eva Marie was a recent example of the fans rejecting 'The chosen one' and the longer Lacey Evans walks up and down the ramp without getting inside the ring, she might go the same way too.

While the women's roster is very strong these days, WWE had a huge problem turning out new stars from 2006 - 2012 after the departures of Lita and Trish left the Divas division directionless and also during the early 2000s when Sable left the company.

This list takes a look at five WWE Divas whom the company tried to push as the next major star, but eventually ended up as disappointments.

#5 Kaitlyn

The only woman in this list to win a Divas Championship, Kaitlyn was the winner of NXT Season 3. But she would probably go down in history as the very last throw-away women's champion in the WWE. She was the one AJ Lee beat in order to start her record-breaking run as Divas Champion, bringing legitimacy back to the title.

Kaitlyn did have a 153-day run as Champion but seemed to be pushed too hard too soon. After forming a tag team called 'Chickbusters' with AJ on SmackDown, Kaitlyn did not distinguish herself in matches against Beth Phoenix and Natalya. After forgettable storylines with the likes of Aksana, a non-acknowledged heel turn and several title matches later, she won the title from a departing Eve Torres when the Divas division was at an all-time low.

Having an ice-cold Tamina Snuka as her challenger did not improve matters and the huge popularity for the rising AJ led to Kaitlyn becoming a bit part player in the last days of the Divas division. She would terminate her contract with WWE in 2014, four years after joining the company.

#4 Tamina

Despite having passable in-ring skills, a lack of charisma has prevented Tamina from reaching the top of the WWE Women's division. Never comfortable on the mike - or even on camera for that matter - every attempt by the company to push Jimmy Snuka's daughter has ended in failure.

Her lack of personality on screen is never more evident from the fact that she has been used as a valet/sidekick in six different incarnations during her eight-year run with the company. She debuted in the WWE as the valet for the Usos, started a comedy angle partnering Santino Marella soon enough before becoming AJ Lee's bodyguard.

Following this, she played third fiddle to Sasha Banks and Naomi in Team B.A.D before being taken off TV for a while. She returned with another push, before being paired with Lana in another failed repackage attempt. She is now associated with Nia Jax on RAW, but her primary job seems to be eating pins so that Jax doesn't look weak.

#3 Tori

Tori had a brief WWE career

In a two year career in the WWE, Tori sure accomplished a lot. She wrestled for the Women's title at both Wrestlemania and Summerslam, became part of D-Generation X and was even involved in a storyline with Kane. Despite her looks, she was not able to get over with the fans and management which curtailed a promising career.

Tori had actually wrestled in All Japan Pro Wrestling before signing with the WWE in late 1998 and starting a Wrestlemania feud with women's Champion Sable. The two stunk the place with a farce of a match at 'Mania, but WWE continued to push Tori with more women's title matches.

Her push intensified the next year when she became the on-screen girlfriend of Kane before dumping him for DX's X-Pac. The angle would involve a returning Kane tombstone Tori to the mat, which received one of the greatest pops of all time. An injury would cut short her stint with DX and she would return later as the long-forgotten Black Ninja, a masked villainess who would help Raven win the Hardcore title.

Tori would be released from the company in 2001.

#2 Christie Hemmie

Christie Hemmie debuted on WWE RAW as a participant of the 2004 Diva Search and she promptly won the competition, earning a $250,000 contract with the company. At a time when WWE was looking for a foil to Women's Champion Trish Stratus, the Creative decided that Hemmie - who had little to no experience in the ring - would be the answer.

She would replace an injured Lita in the plans for Wrestlemania 21, setting up a match with Trish Stratus. A match that should have crowned a new player in the women's division ended up going Trish's way as WWE wasn't convinced of Hemmie's in-ring skills.

Hemmie would later move on to feuds with Victoria and Melina and also managed the Road Warriors for a while. With the need to improve her skills more apparent, WWE demoted her to the developmental territory OVW, which eventually led to Hemmie getting released from her contract.

#1 Ashley Massaro

The winner of the 2005 Diva Search, Ashley Massaro debuted on WWE RAW with big expectations. She was promptly endorsed on-screen by Trish Stratus and had a tag team match alongside Trish against Victoria and Torrie Wilson at that year's Unforgiven.

She seemed to be heading to WrestleMania 22 as part of a feud with fellow newcomer Mickie James and Trish Stratus, but an in-ring injury put an end to that plan. In her absence, Mickie beat Trish for the Women's title, and with her considerable wrestling experience, convinced the WWE Creative and fans that she could carry on the mantle as the top performer on the women's division after Trish and Lita.

Ashley would still be pushed after her return and challenged for Melina's Women's title at Wrestlemania 23. But her in-ring skills had not developed up to the mark and the match was considered as a dud. With Trish and Lita now retired, WWE turned to the likes of James, Melina, Beth Phoenix, and Michelle McCool to be the figureheads of the women's division, leaving Ashley in the cold.

She would still be featured on TV and PPVs and even had a segment at the next WrestleMania, but would soon ask for her release from the company, having not lived up to her potential as the expected popular baby face.
