5 WWE dream matches that happened way too late

If you ask a wrestling fan about dream matches, there's no shortage of answers.

What would have happened if Shawn Michaels had tackled Eddie Guerrero in 2006 at WrestleMania 22? Or who would have emerged victorious in an encounter between arguably two biggest icons of wrestling: Hulk Hogan or Steve Austin?

And though some dream matches will never happen, some have, though only a handful have lived up to the hype.

Here are five WWE dream matches that unfortunately took place way too late and really should have just remained a dream.

#5: Mr McMahon Vs. Bret 'Hitman' Hart (WWE WrestleMania 26)

Hart had been retired for nearly a decade when he took on the Boss in 2010.
Hart had been retired for nearly a decade when he took on the Boss in 2010.

When Bret Hart was done dirty in Montreal in November 1997, fans were rightly shocked.

A moment that would forever change wrestling, the incident proved that no WWE Superstar could truly trust Vince McMahon, even those who had remained loyal for so long.

So when WCW folded a few years later, fans waited for the imminent return of the Hitman to get revenge on his former boss, who had since risen to even greater prominence in the WWF as arguably the greatest villain on screen.

And then fans waited, and waited, and followed that up with waiting some more. By the time the duo finally clashed at WrestleMania 26, both men had aged considerably.

Hart had been retired for nearly a decade after suffering a concussion in 2000, so there was very little the match could bring to the table.

Though the match (which Hart won), is probably the best bout the pair could have delivered, fans can't help but wonder just how great it'd have been to see back when both were at their peaks both physically and as characters.

#4: Demolition Vs. Legion of Doom (Wrestling Classic, 1991)

When Demolition debuted in the World Wrestling Federation, many saw the duo of Ax and Smash as the company's answers to the Road Warriors.

To be fair, much like Hawk and Animal, Demolition boasted an incredible move-set, tag team offence and painted faces much like their counterparts. So when the Road Warriors joined the WWF and were rechristened the Road Warriors, fans were pumped to see the two iconic teams finally collide.

Unfortunately, the company acted too late, and by the time the two teams did clash on Wrestling Classic, it meant very little. Demolition had lost a lot of its mystique, and having Crush replace Ax for the bout was the final blow in their aura.

What could have been a dream match just a few years earlier, turned out to be nothing.

#3: Goldberg Vs. The Undertaker (WWE Super ShowDown 2019)

This hotly-anticipated match ended up being a dud in Jeddah this year.

The most recent match on this list, this match feels much older despite the fact that it wasn't too long ago. Goldberg and The Undertaker had a match which many fans believe shouldn't have happened.

In the run-up to WWE Super ShowDown, the company sold the show almost entirely on Goldberg Vs. The Undertaker, as the legendary WCW star collided with the Phenom of WWE in their first match ever.

Unfortunately, what happened was a botch-filled sloppy encounter, as both men showed their age, and it got hard to watch two men who built careers on looking unstoppable, appearing so frail.

Perhaps the match would have been better ten, or even 15 years ago, but many fans are now hoping that this 'first match ever', will also be the last encounter between the two legends.

#2: Sting Vs. Triple H (WrestleMania 31)

Sting and the Game 'ended' a war which had finished over 14 years earlier.

When Sting finally joined WWE in November 2014, at the expense of Triple H, fans knew what was coming. In the Stinger's first match in the company, the icon of WCW took on the Game at WrestleMania 31 in 2015, a match Triple H surprisingly won.

Though the match is fun, filled of heavy hits and appearances by both D-Generation X and the nWo, the story going in is another matter.

The company had built the story about being WCW vs. WWE, even though the company had done this already with the Invasion, and at this point in wrestling, the Atlanta promotion had been long dead.

Shaking hands after the match, it seemed like both men had 'ended' a war, that everyone had already considered over for over 14 years.

#1: Brock Lesnar Vs. Goldberg (WrestleMania 20)

Even 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin couldn't save this blunder of a match.
Even 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin couldn't save this blunder of a match.

It's hard to pinpoint the right moment that Goldberg and Brock Lesnar should have faced off in their first ever encounter, but we know WrestleMania 20 definitely wasn't it.

After a slow feud that dated all the way back to Survivor Series, the pair were ready to collide in a hotly-anticipated match, until real life got in the way.

As news broke that both Lesnar and Goldberg would be leaving the company after the match, fans booed both men relentlessly, and things weren't helped by both former World Champions giving a woeful performance, not caring at all about the bout.

Not even the presence of 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin could save this match, as though Goldberg and Lesnar were stunned out of WWE by the Rattlesnake, the damage had already been done.

Thankfully, the two would redeem this flop 13 years later at WrestleMania 33. Despite being much older, they would put on an instant classic - a 5-minute chaotic match.
