Malenko became obsessed with Lita in late 2000. He offered her a match for his WWE Light Heavyweight Championship in exchange for a date if Lita lost. The former women's champion accepted the offer. Lita was close to scoring the win on a few occasions during the title match but eventually lost in the end.
Two months later on RAW, Lita went one-on-one again with Malenko under the condition that if she won, he would let her go.
Malenko, who is considered one of the greatest cruiserweights of all time, dominated the match until he accidentally knocked the referee out. Looking to take advantage of the referee's absence, he brought a steel chair into the ring. However, Malenko was the one who got hit with the chair when Matt Hardy interfered to rescue Lita.

As the referee returned to the ring, Lita covered The Man of 1,000 Holds for the pin. Hardy celebrated the victory with Lita as the two stars kissed to start their romantic relationship on-screen.
