5 WWE stars that AEW could target

Despite having Superstars like Kenny Omega and Chris Jericho, the AEW roster still seems a bit thin
Despite having Superstars like Kenny Omega and Chris Jericho, the AEW roster still seems a bit thin

AEW has been slowly and steadily gaining prominence and they've signed some good wrestlers and some big stars as well. Wrestlers like Chris Jericho, Kenny Omega, Cody Rhodes, Goldberg and Neville are part of AEW and rightly so in recent times they've moved their focus from recruiting to getting the other logistics in place.

But still, when you look at it, you see that the AEW roster is a bit thin. They've signed some good wrestlers but they are still lacking the star power. A wrestler who doesn't need to get over and is already known by everyone. Yes, wrestlers like Kenny Omega and Chris Jericho do fit the bill but AEW could do with a few more. Looking at the current situation in WWE and the gross mishandling of some of the legit superstars (and the resultant possible frustration they could be garnering), AEW could look at a few potential targets which it can bring to its roster and provide them with a chance to shine and do something different.

Let's have a look at some of the probable wrestlers that AEW could target in the coming future:-

#1 Rey Mysterio

Rey Mysterio has reinvented himself and Looks better than ever since his return

It's a bit of a shock to see Rey Mysterio do the kinds of things he does in a Wrestling ring especially after doing all of this for so long. At the same time, as a fan, it's almost infuriating to see Rey not getting much of the spotlight in WWE despite putting on classics after classics whenever he gets a chance.

One of the reasons is because of the notion in WWE where they feel Rey is at the end of the road and won't be able to add too much value to the company (contrary to how he still moves in the ring). AEW could do with a star like Rey because what Rey brings to the table is a bit of both. The quality of matches that Rey delivers are among the best in the business and at the same time, the amount of love that Rey has garnered throughout his career is unprecedented. Someone like him would be an amazing addition for AEW even if he doesn't stick around for the long haul.

#2 Randy Orton

Randy Orton seems to have reached the end of the road at WWE

Now, this is an odd one, Randy Orton is an out and out WWE guy. He has been part of the developmental scene for WWE and then has step by step grown on to become a WWE legend. But then you look at what he's been doing for the last year and you see that Randy has hit a dead end of sorts. He has been leapfrogged in the pecking order by Wrestlers like AJ Styles, All the three members of Shield, Braun Strowman and many others. He hasn't featured in the main event feud for a long long time.

One of the reasons is that Randy is a 13-time Champion and if he becomes the champion one more time he would level Triple H (something which might not go down well with the game). He's meandered in the mid-card feuds for a long time now and it almost seems that he's run out of options about what to do next.

The sad part is whenever you see Randy you see someone with such an amazing charisma that could keep the crowd glued to the screens. He has so much to offer but it seems that he's coming to the end of the road with WWE. In AEW, Randy could see an opportunity of offering a great value to the promotion and in turn, get a chance to do something completely different from what he's done all these years. More so, for AEW a star like Randy would mean a huge body blow to WWE and at the same time a massive boost to the roster.

#3 The Hardy Boys

Hardy Boys haven't really clicked in WWE ever since their return
Hardy Boys haven't really clicked in WWE ever since their return

If any evidence is needed then the last week provided it. Hardy Boyz have still got it and they are still a force to be reckoned with. The issue though is somehow WWE seems to have not found a way in recent times to make things work with these two. Jeff has meandered in the mid-card for a long time now contesting in feuds which are slightly inconsequential while Matt has been away from the scene due to injuries.

One of the highlights of the career for these two were when they themselves created the "Broken Universe" in TNA but the creative restrictions in WWE never allowed for it to be moulded into something big or even relatable in the WWE universe. AEW could provide the creative genius of these two a genuine chance to flourish and it could be a great opportunity for these two to explore. On the other hand, for AEW, they get two of the most popular and successful stars of WWE who have a proven record of succeeding beyond the confines of WWE

#4 Shinsuke Nakamura

Nakamura boasts of one of the most underwhelming US Championship reigns through no fault of his own
Nakamura boasts of one of the most underwhelming US Championship reigns through no fault of his own

What do you do when you hire a legitimate superstar from your rival promotion? You put them through the developmental route. What do you do when he not only wins the crowd but also outright proves himself? You put him on the main roster. But what do you do next with someone who is so eccentric and capable of pulling out 5-Star matches in the main roster? You do exactly what WWE didn't do.

Shinsuke Nakamura is a legitimate superstar but the way he's been treated at WWE is just horrible. One of the biggest reasons going around for that eventuality is the fact that the creative team is out of ideas of what to do with him. Which is a shock by all means because even if they followed the template used at NXT, Nakamura would have conquered the main roster as well.

There's no reason not to think that Nakamura's days at WWE are numbered (with the way he's getting booked for a while now). But there's also no reason not to think that AEW offers Nakamura a great opportunity to redeem himself after a more than an underwhelming stint at WWE. And who would want to see Kenny Omega and Shinsuke Nakamura go at it?

#5 Dean Ambrose

It's still not a surety whether Ambrose would stick around in WWE or leave after his contract runs out
It's still not a surety whether Ambrose would stick around in WWE or leave after his contract runs out

It's still a big if whether Dean Ambrose is for sure leaving the WWE universe after his contract runs out but if he is then there's a legitimate reason behind it. He's been turned into a third wheel in his own stable "The Shield" and has been sometimes put in feuds which just don't make any sense.

Just, for instance, the former WWE Champion was left stranded in the pre-show at WrestleMania last year while his Shield buddies faced Triple H and Brock Lesnar respectively. The word "grossly mishandled" is perfect to describe how it has been for Ambrose. Even the recent heel turn was shambolically handled which ultimately tipped Dean over the edge.

A switch to AEW would be great for both the parties because in Dean AEW would get a fresh face who could actually stick there for a long long time and for Dean it offers him an opportunity to try something new and try to fulfil his passion of wrestling, something he wasn't able to tap into for a while now..
