It may not seem it now, but before things got heated between WWE and AEW, Chris Jericho departed Vince McMahon's employment in 2018 on very good terms.

Jericho has left WWE on several occasions before, and each time, he left on good terms.

He first left in mid-2005 after suffering burnout and would return in late 2007. In 2010, Jericho would leave once again to concentrate on his rock band Fozzy. He returned in late 2011 and remained in WWE until 2018.

Jericho made a surprise appearance at NJPW in late 2017. He challenged Kenny Omega to a match at Wrestle Kingdom 12 in January 2018.

Jericho's last appearance for WWE would be at the Greatest Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia. But he was still open to working with the company and even during his IWGP Intercontinental Championship run, he asked Vince about doing a title vs. title match between NJPW and WWE.

On his Aug 16, 2018, Talk is Jericho podcast Jericho would say:

"I placed a call to a certain head of a certain wrestling company, let's just leave it at that. I said, 'I've got something for ya. It's boffo box office. It's big time. I said 'what do you think about first-time-ever Intercontinental Champion vs Intercontinental Champion, Jericho vs Rollins.' What's the finish? Doesn't matter."

Obviously, that never happened, and even when Jericho was about to sign to AEW, he let Vince know about it.

"I'm not in AEW because I was a rebel. I'm with AEW because Vince went, 'go.' And then, when I went, he went, 'did you sign the contract?' I said, 'well, yeah.' He said, 'can you get out of it?' 'No! You told me to sign it!' But [Vince] had the opportunity to stop it like he did with [Scott Hall], which is very interesting to me because 23 years later, he made the same [mistake]. I love Vince.”

Despite Jericho signing with a new, rival company, there doesn't seem to be any hard feelings from Vince McMahon about him doing so.
