Asuka has enjoyed an eventful year in WWE so far and has been involved with many high-profile feuds, mostly involving the RAW Women's Championship. At the start of the year, Asuka battled Becky Lynch for the title and later won the Money in the Bank ladder match. Asuka found out that she won the title a day later when Lynch surprised her by handing her the championship and explaining that she was relinquishing the title as she was becoming a mother.

Asuka has defended the WWE RAW Women's Championship for many months, against the likes of Mickie James and Zelina Vega. The Empress of Tomorrow briefly dropped the championship to Sasha Banks, who is now the WWE SmackDown Women's Champion, but managed to win it back a week later.

Over the past few months, Asuka doesn't seem to have had a title feud that has depth. Her most recent title match was against Lana, who surprisingly won a Battle Royal on RAW, and prior to this, there was no hint at a rivalry between the two.

Keeping the championship on Asuka until the Royal Rumble seems quite likely at the moment. Having the winner of the women's Royal Rumble challenge Asuka to the RAW Women's Championship feels like a great way to provide her with a rival.
