Ladder matches are one of the most dangerous types of matches in WWE. No matter how trained you are, there's always a risk when a huge lug of steel is involved as well as falling of heights.

With that being said, let's take a look at some serious injuries suffered by WWE Superstars in ladder matches over the years.

#5 CM Punk

We start off our list with the notorious 2013 Money In The Bank ladder match which also appears later on our list. We start off with the nasty injury suffered by CM Punk that night. The nasty looking gash was the result of Paul Heyman repeatedly hitting Punk over the head with a ladder.

You can check out a photo of Punk after getting his stitches below. Punk shared the photo on social media following the match. Another serious injury was suffered by a Superstar during this match. More on that in slide #3.

#4 Jeff Hardy

Extreme Rules 2009 was a huge show for WWE for a number of reasons. However, we're here to discuss the ladder match between Edge and Jeff Hardy for the World Heavyweight Championship.

The match featured a number of dangerous spots and Jeff Hardy ended up leaving with multiple injuries. The first injury Hardy suffered was a shoulder injury that took place following a ladder to ladder spot between him and Edge. The second injury was a broken finger which was the result of an awkward fall from the ladder.

Hardy eventually won the match but his victory was short lived. CM Punk came out and cashed in his Money In The Bank contract to win the World Heavyweight title.

#3 Sheamus

The 2013 Money In The Bank ladder match is still one of my favourite ones, and it left quite an impact on the Superstars taking part in it. CM Punk left with a nasty looking cut to his head. For his part, Rob Van Dam left with a cut on his head that needed multiple staples to close and that wasn't even the worst injury suffered during the match.

Sheamus, who is currently one-half of The Bar along with Cesaro, picked up a nasty shoulder injury that left him sidelined for months. To be exact, Sheamus suffered from a torn labrum on his to his shoulder after Rob Van Dam pushed a ladder while Sheamus was at the top of the said ladder and the Irishman landed awkwardly.

#2 Bubba Ray Dudley

This one is one of the scariest incidents on this list. The year was 2002 and we were seeing the fourth ever TLC match on WWE RAW. That night, all the participants in the ring upped their ante and took some risks that they shouldn't have.

One particularly nasty spot saw Bubba Ray Dudley get concussed badly after Chris Jericho hit him with a Bulldog from the top of the ladder. Bubba blacked out soon after taking the move and was in a scary state backstage.

Bubba Ray Dudley's mother had actually recently passed away at the time, and Bubba Ray was so concussed that when he was being helped backstage, he kept on asking to see his mother. Tommy Dreamer, who was with Bubba Ray, was forced to lie to him in that scary situation and told him that his mother would come down later.

#1 Joey Mercury

We end this list with the most gruesome injury of the 5 - Joey Mercury's broken nose.

The year was 2006 and MNM (Mercury, Nitro, Melina) were facing William Regal & Dave Taylor, Brian Kendrick & Paul London and The Hardyz at the Armageddon PPV for the Tag-Team Championships.

At point during the match, Mercury was accidentally struck by a ladder to his face and it smashed his nose completely. Blood started spewing out uncontrollably and he needed help right away.

The injury was sort of a death knell for Joey Mercury's in-ring career. He did return to the ring later but it was never quite the same again. After having trouble with addiction issues, Mercury returned to WWE later as a backstage guy and was even a part of J&J Security along with Jamie Noble.
