Soon after the 2004 Royal Rumble, SmackDown General Manager Paul Heyman decided to hold a SmackDown Royal Rumble match featuring 15 Superstars from the blue show. This was done after Chris Benoit won the annual free-for-all and switched brands to compete for Triple H's World title.

The match was won by Eddie Guerrero, to the absolute shock of the fans. At WWE No Way Out 2005, Guerrero met Brock Lesnar in the main event. Lesnar had been WWE Champion for a while at that point, after he beat Kurt Angle for the same, months ago. At the Royal Rumble, Lesnar had interfered in the match and cost Goldberg an opportunity at the World title at WrestleMania 20.

Goldberg exacted revenge on Lesnar in his match with Guerrero, and hit him with a devastating spear during the closing moments of the match. Moments later, Guerrero hit Lesnar with a Frog Splash and pinned him to become WWE Champion.
This was the only World title win in Guerrero's career. He passed away due to heart failure on November 13, 2005. WWE honored his legacy by inducting him into the WWE Hall of Fame the following year.

He would book Roman Reigns to re-form The Bloodline with The Usos and Sami Zayn upon his comeback. The angle would see The Tribal Chief-led group go head-to-head with The Rock, Solo Sikoa, Tama Tonga, and Jacob Fatu in a blockbuster family feud.
