The original NXT may not have been great, but at least the first season helped to establish stars. After winning the first season, Wade Barrett teamed with his fellow rookies to demolish the RAW roster, forming the Nexus.

Destroying all who opposed him, it was only a matter of time before the 7 NXT rookies were main eventers, with the team facing a team of WWE Superstars, led by John Cena.

The plan was for the Nexus to emerge on top, in what would've been the rookies' biggest win and would have established Barrett as a sure-fire future World Champion.

At some point though, Cena demanded the match be changed, with Big Match John destroying the group, and whilst Cena himself has said he regrets the demand, that doesn't make up for it. It's only from the last couple of years that Cena has been putting over younger stars left and right.
