One of WWE’s key areas of strength since its national expansion in the 1980s has been merchandising.

Eric Bischoff has openly acknowledged on the 83 Weeks podcast that WCW never had much of a merchandise infrastructure until he took over, and even then he was always playing catch up to meet the demands of his growing business.

Meanwhile, WWE seemed to realize the power of not only making money, but helping fans feel connected with their product through T-shirts, replica championship belts, and of course toys.

Toys may be the most essential piece of WWE’s merchandise empire as they appeal to young fans who can command their parents’ purchasing, not to mention the degree to which WWE typically appeals to kids, and that those kids will hopefully have years of dedicated fanhood ahead of them.

WWE’s line of toys hasn’t remained the same over the last thirty years, though. The products have evolved to not only include a more advanced and diverse array of action figures, but also other products that kids from decades past could only dream of.

This article looks at five WWE toys available now that we wish we’d had when we were kids.

#5 The 10-Piece Hardcore Accessories Playset

Action figures have been a staple pro wrestling product since the 1980s, but for the longest time kids had to imagine their own settings for matches.

Particularly as hardcore wrestling came into vogue, kids would have to pull toys from other sets or rely purely on their imaginations to concoct the elaborate brawls that WWE staged on a weekly basis on TV.

The 10-Piece Harcore accessories playset from Ringside Collectibles includes a cage, trash can, baseball bats and more to allow kids to create all manner of scenarios and reinvent staples from WWE’s hardcore, TLC, and street fight style matches.

Best of all, these accessories are built to match the scale of most wrestling figures, thus avoiding some of the awkward mismatched sizes that kids come across when they take a more do it yourself approach to providing their toy men and women with hardcore arsenals.

#4 The WWE Sound Slammers Destruction Zone Playset

Having a suitable toy ring to play with action figures is a key element of both fully imagining wrestling scenarios as well as a key accessory for toy display when a kid isn’t actively playing, or after they might outgrow playing with figures, but still appreciate their old toys as decorations.

The WWE Sound Slammers Destruction Zone Playset takes all of these dynamics to the next level.

Pairing a more traditional model ring with a ladder, crane, chain link fence, and construction site vehicles, this playset offers maximum carnage for kids to imagine elaborate scenarios that may well transcend pro wrestling itself.

Additionally, the Sound Slammer element of the toy creates the sound of wrestlers taking big bumps on the mat as a fun add-on that lends a sense of realism to playing centered on the wrestling ring itself. It’s a pricier toy, retailing for around forty dollars, but a worthwhile investment for years of play.

#3 WWE Epic Moments: Festival of Friendship

After watching a truly exceptional moment go down on wrestling television, one of the first things a young wrestling fan might want to do is use his or her toys to recreate the scene.

Fans of older generations may have reimagined, for example, Andre the Giant tearing the crucifix from Hulk Hogan’s neck, or Shawn Michaels throwing Marty Jannetty through the plate glass window of Brutus Beefcake’s barbershop set.

Today’s kids can have a more authentic experience of reliving and recreative iconic pieces of wrestling history via the WWE Epic Moments line.

In particular, the Festival of Friendship playset compiles the key components of the instant classic segment in which Chris Jericho sought to celebrate his alliance with Kevin Owens in over the top fashion, only for KO to respond by brutally attacking his buddy.

This is the sort of toy that nicely doubles as both fun to play with and an optimal decorative display for the budding wrestling historian.

#2 Black Coffin for WWE Wrestling Action Figures

When it comes to wrestling icons who have spanned generations and still manage to attract attention and awe from even today’s kids, there are few stars who can compare to The Undertaker.

The mystique of his entrance and the supernatural undertones of his character, combined with the credibility of nearly thirty years in his gimmick have made him an irresistible star and one young fans are still eager to collect a figure for.

The Undertaker action figure isn’t complete without some key accessories, and one of the best of them now available is the Black Coffin for WWE Wrestling Action Figures. So many of the Dead Man’s most legendary rivalries and best moments include Casket Matches or at least the image of rising from such an apparatus unexpected.

A toy accessory like this one, sized to fit WWE action figures, is a great choice for the fan who may already have a pretty full roster of figures and be looking to fill out the more esoteric parts of a collection.

WWE and other unaffiliated wrestling promotions and toy companies have produced toy rings for some time, so the idea of kids having their own toy ring to play with their figures isn’t entirely novel.

The Retro Ring Playset, however, combines old-school aesthetics from the WWE of yore that is anything but generic, with a sense of completeness and quality craftsmanship that toys of yesteryear simply did not have.

This Mattel playset comes not only with a durable ring and authentically crafted ring ropes, but also removable ring steps and title display to more fully imagine a contemporary WWE match.

It’s a fun set for today’s kids to play with, while it captures a lot of the look of a more old school WWE ring with a riff off of the 1980s company logo and the signature red, white, and blue ring ropes of yesteryear.
