WWE WrestleMania XV saw The Rock main event his first ever WrestleMania pay-per-view as he defended the WWE Championship against Stone Cold Steve Austin.

By that point, The Rock was already a 3-time WWE Champion. The Great One initially won the WWE Championship at Survivor Series 1998 before dropping it to Mankind several times in late 1998 and early 1999.

Nevertheless, once the dust had settled from his feud with Mankind, The Rock was set to face The Texas Rattlesnake on the grandest stage of them all.

Stone Cold Steve Austin was the runner-up in the 1999 Royal Rumble match, having been eliminated last by the winner, Mr. McMahon. However, the WWE Chairman refused to face The Rock at WrestleMania XV and forfeited his WWE Championship opportunity.

This led to WWE Commissioner Shawn Michaels revealing that the WWE Championship opportunity would therefore go to the runner-up of the 1999 Royal Rumble match, Stone Cold Steve Austin. This set up the first of what would be a trilogy of matches between The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin at WrestleMania events.

Despite the best efforts of The Corporation, Stone Cold Steve Austin defeated The Rock to become the WWE Champion once again in a No Disqualification match. By competing in his first WrestleMania main event at the age of 26, The Rock became one of the youngest WWE Superstars to ever main event WrestleMania in WWE history.
