WWE WrestleMania IX saw Yokozuna make WWE history for a variety of reasons. Yokozuna's rise in WWE was truly meteoric. After only debuting 3 months prior, Yokozuna won the 1993 Royal Rumble match, last eliminating "Macho Man" Randy Savage.

By winning the Royal Rumble match, Yokozuna earned his opportunity to face WWE Champion Bret "Hitman" Hart in the main event of WrestleMania IX for the WWE Championship inside Caesars Palace in Nevada.

Bret Hart seemingly had the match won when he locked in the Sharpshooter with Yokozuna only seconds away from submitting. However, Mr. Fuji threw salt into the eyes of Bret Hart, causing the champion to be blinded. This allowed Yokozuna to pin Hart to become the WWE Champion for the first time.

Unfortunately for Yokozuna, his WWE Championship reign would be shortlived. Moments later, Hulk Hogan emerged to help Bret Hart. Mr. Fuji then challenged Hogan to face Yokozuna for the WWE Championship immediately. Hulk Hogan accepted and defeated Yokozuna in 22 seconds, becoming the new WWE Champion.

However, by winning the WWE Championship, Yokozuna became the second fastest superstar to win the Championship after their debut. In addition, Yokozuna also became the youngest superstar to ever become WWE Champion at the age of 25.

Furthermore, at the time, Yokozuna also set the record of becoming the youngest superstar to ever main event WrestleMania at the age of 26 years, six months and two days.
