6 botches you probably missed at WWE Backlash

Backlash had a number of unforgettable moments
Backlash included a number of unforgettable moments

Backlash signaled the beginning of a new era for WWE, but even in a new era, the company had the same old problems. Raw and SmackDown collided in the first-ever dual brand pay-per-view since the Superstar Shakeup and there were a number of moments that stood out throughout the show for all the wrong reasons.

There weren't any botches bigger than Titus O'Neil's show-stealing slide at The Greatest Royal Rumble, but there were still a number of noticeable errors as part of tonight's show.

#6 The unintentional chair shot

The No Disqualification match between Shinsuke Nakamura and AJ Styles for the WWE Championship was always going to include weapons, but it was the introduction of a chair that appeared to be the biggest downfall for Styles.

The WWE Champion threw the steel chair at Nakamura and the rebound then hit The Phenomenal One in the face and cut his cheek open.

#5 Roman Reigns tapped out

Roman Reigns tapped out to Samoa Joe

Roman Reigns defeated Samoa Joe in their main event grudge match, but much earlier in the match when Joe locked in the Coquina Clutch, it appears that Reigns actually tapped out.

The former World Champion is no stranger to controversial finishes to matches after losing his Universal Championship match to Brock Lesnar at The Greatest Royal Rumble, due to the referee's decision, despite it being the wrong one.

It appears that Joe was actually the winner of this match since Reigns can clearly be seen tapping out to the hold below.

#4 Ruby Riott vs Bayley

Ruby Riott's match against Bayley was a strange addition to the Kickoff show for Backlash, but the women proved that they had a reason to do battle, even though Sasha Banks refused to help her former friend to even the odds with The Riott Squad at ringside.

Bayley and Riott were the women who were given the task of setting the tone for the show, but two botches in quick succession left many fans with a sour taste in their mouth as Riott shockingly botched an Irish Whip before Bayley then managed to get stuck trying to get over the top rope.

#3 That big boot

Carmella retained her Championship at Backlash

Charlotte's attempt to reclaim her SmackDown Women's Championship began with a big boot to Carmella as she tried to recreate the "Styling and Profiling" ways of Ric Flair. The issue with this impactful beginning to the match is that Flair completely missed the kick.

Carmella fell backward and took the bump before Charlotte had made contact with her, this was reminiscent of the botch from John Cena in his match against The Undertaker at WrestleMania.

#2 Pre-show issues?

If you're going to make mistakes then the pre-show is the best place to make them, which is why it seems that there were a number of issues with both the production quality and the commentary team on the kickoff show during Ruby Riott's match against Bayley.

The most noticeable moment was when Bayley climbed to the top rope and the stream was lost for a few seconds whilst the screen went blank, it appears that the team at ringside were having their own issues as well.

#1 Wrong place, wrong time

AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura looked to settle their differences in a No DQ match

Shinsuke Nakamura fought for the WWE Championship for the third time in a month at Backlash, but the former NXT Champion appeared to have an issue with a cameraman as well as the current Champion.

AJ Styles whipped Nakamura into the barricade in the opening exchanges of the match, and The King Of Strong Style accidentally kicked the cameraman in the face as he sat at next to the barricade. It didn't look as though he bumped the shot very well at all.
