WWE and Hollywood have a lot in common. Both industries are riddled with melodrama, larger than life characters and politics, and both industries are notoriously difficult to be successful in.

It is no surprise then that several WWE superstars have gone on to find success on the silver screen.

The lore of Hollywood has always been a problem for WWE management, with several major stars hanging up their boots and heading out to LA to make their living there.

Of course, some superstars have gone on to be more successful than others so for the sake of variety, this list is limited to one film per wrestler, otherwise, this list would be entitled 'Five best movies starring Dwayne Johnson'.

With several former superstars, including Wade Barrett and Batista starring in movies released this month, let's take a look at the five best movies with WWE stars in leading roles.

#5 They Live

Horror auteur, John Carpenter has one of the most iconic filmographies of the 1980s, and one of his finest outings, They Live, features WWE icon Roddy Piper in the lead role.

Despite performing fairly poorly at the box office, the film has gone on to earn cult status among film fans, due in no small part to the iconic lead performance of former WWE superstar, Piper.

Piper is widely regarded as one of the most charismatic WWE superstars of all time, and he had no difficulty transmitting that charisma onto the big screen. His iconic 'I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass, and I'm all out of bubble gum' quickly became a Hollywood favourite, and can still be seen on t-shirts and posters around the world to this day.

#4 Blockers

Blockers is one of the best comedies of 2018 so far

When it comes to John Cena, the WWE's loss has been Hollywood's gain. The former WWE champion has taken to acting like a fish to water, and his most recent starring role, playing a concerned father in the Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen produced comedy, Blockers, is his finest outing yet.

Hollywood has managed to utilise Cena's natural comedic timing perfectly, and he is an inspired piece of casting here.

Seeing John Cena chug beer through his butt is always going to be an amusing sight, but wrestling fans, who spent a good decade booing the guy every time he walked into an arena will get an extra special kick from the scene.

The film achieved success both critically, and financially - scoring 86% on review aggregate site, Rotten Tomatoes, and taking £93 million worldwide of a £21 million budget.

#3 Princess Bride - Andre The Giant

Andre the Giant is one of the most beloved WWE wrestlers of all time. The former WWE champion is one of few superstars to truly transcend the business and cement his place in popular culture, and one of the biggest reasons for that was his famously warm and lovable personality.

In the early 1990s, director Rob Reiner managed to successfully tap into that, casting the former WWE champion as the giant, Fezik in his movie, The Princess Bride.

Andre was perfect for the role, and the film would go on to become one of the most iconic fantasy movies of the decade.

Similar to They Live, the film failed to make any waves at the box office on its initial release but it went on to become a cult classic and is now seen as one of the most popular children's movies of all time.

Andre would sadly pass away a few years after the film was released but his life would inspire his friend, Billy Crystal to pen the movie 'My Giant' in tribute to the WWE icon.

#2 Guardians of The Galaxy - Batista

Batista's success in Hollywood has come as a little bit of a surprise to large portions of the WWE Universe.

The Animal always had an incredible physical presence, but he never quite displayed the levels of charisma one would expect from one of the industry's biggest stars. It was this that it made it so surprising when Marvel announced that they had hired the former Evolution member for their movie, Guardians of the Galaxy.

In the movie, Batista plays one of the titular Guardians of the Galaxy, Drax. Drax possesses several powers, including super strength and resistance to injury. His most notable feature, though, is the fact that he is only capable of interpreting things literally.

This leads to several hilarious moments throughout the movie, and Drax would become even more of a star with his later appearances in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and Avengers: Infinity War.

The MCU is the biggest movie franchise in the world right now, and it has helped establish Batista as a household name. While he may not have quite reached the levels of Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Batista is one of few wrestlers who can claim that he has successfully made it in Hollywood.

#1 Moana

When it comes to wrestlers finding success in Hollywood, there is no-one quite like Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. The former WWE champion has become one of the highest grossing actors on the planet, and the sheer mention of his name on a movie poster is enough to guarantee box-office success.

Oddly enough, though, despite his unrivaled physical presence and his million dollar smile, The Rock's finest movie outing came in a movie where he was not physically on the screen. His voice performance as the demi-god, Maui, in Disney's 2016 hit, Moana really cemented his place as one of the most beloved performers in Hollywood, and it also gave him the opportunity to demonstrate his vocal range as a performer.

His performance of the song, 'You're Welcome' is one of the movie's best moments, and cemented his place in the hearts and minds of young children everywhere.
