Vince McMahon thinks he can bring back Alberto Del Rio

What's the story?

It's been more than a year since Alberto Del Rio left WWE after he opted to walk away from his contract rather than sitting out a 30-day suspension back in 2016, but it seems that he still has a huge supporter who wants him to return, according to a report from PWInsider.

In case you didn't know...

Del Rio is a former World Champion in WWE and was once seen as one of the company's top stars before he was fired back in 2014 when he slapped an employee for making a racist joke.

The Mexican Star didn't stay away from the company for long since he was the man who answered John Cena's Open Challenge for the United States Championship back at Hell in a Cell in 2015 and held the title for two months before he lost it to Kalisto.

Del Rio only signed a year-long contract when he returned to the company in 2015 and decided to walk away from WWE in the summer of 2016 when he was suspended along with his girlfriend Paige for violating the Wellness Policy.

Del Rio has since been working for a number of other promotions including Impact Wrestling, where he has seemingly once again been able to find his feet after a year of scandal alongside his now ex-girlfriend Paige.

The heart of the matter

It seems that Alberto Del Rio's contract with Impact Wrestling was a topic of conversation on today's PWInsider Elite Audio, where Mike Johnson stated that he had heard rumours that WWE Chairman Vince McMahon wanted Del Rio back in WWE. (Transcript via Ringsidenews)

“There has certainly been rumblings of interest from the WWE and believe this or not I have heard there is rumblings of interest in an Alberto El Patron’s return. From what I understand, Vince McMahon just loves Alberto and would love to have Alberto Del Rio back in his company. whether that happens or not, I have no idea.”

Del Rio's contract with Impact Wrestling expires in April and even though those close to the situation believe that Del Rio will resign with the company there could be some sway for him to return to WWE if he has the Chairman's backing.

What's next?

WWE could be losing a lot of main stars after WrestleMania and with the brand split on pay-per-view coming to an end and the draft coming up in the next few months, there could be a number of faces brought back to the company.

Author's take

There were a lot of rumours surrounding Alberto Del Rio's WWE departure and the fact that the company tried to come between him and his girlfriend Paige.

It seems that they all managed to stay on the same page through which could be why McMahon thinks he has a chance of bringing the former World Champion back to the company in the future.

By all accounts, he is set to resign with Impact, so maybe it will be something for Vince to work on in the distant future.
