From the WWE rumor mill: Backstage news on the changes to the 5-on-5 Survivor Series match

Team SmackDown Live and Team Raw clash in the main event of Survivor Series this Sunday...

What's the story?

Mike Johnson of PWInsider is reporting on the backstage information regarding so many changes to the Survivor Series card for the pay per view that is coming up this Sunday. Management decided many of these changes over the weekend and set in motion during the go-home shows for both Monday Night Raw and SmackDown Live this week.

In case you didn't know...

The very first Survivor Series took place from Richfield Township, Ohio and from the very start the 5-on-5 elimination format was used. The main event of that pay per view was Andre The Giant, Butch Reed, King Kong Bundy, One Man Gang, and Rick Rude defeating the team of Hulk Hogan, Bam Bam Bigelow, Don Muraco, Ken Patera, and Paul Orndorff.

The heart of the matter...

Two of the major matches at Survivor Series changed during the go-home shows with Triple H replacing Jason Jordan on Team Raw and Charlotte Flair defeating Natalya for the WWE SmackDown Women's Championship; which enables her to face the WWE Raw Women's Champion Alexa Bliss now.

When looking at the entire card for Survivor Series, there are a total of seven matches on the main show, and only the WWE Intercontinental Champion The Miz taking on the WWE United States Champion Baron Corbin remained untouched.

Even that match had the potential to change if Sin Cara was able to defeat Corbin this week on SmackDown Live, but he fell short.

What's next?

Survivor Series is just a few short days away this Sunday, November 19th on the WWE Network. The show will take place from Houston, Texas headlined by Team Raw (Kurt Angle, Triple H, Finn Balor, and Samoa Joe) v. Team SmackDown (Shane McMahon, John Cena, Bobby Roode, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Randy Orton).

Author's take...

I keep going back and forth on my opinion of the ever-changing card for Survivor Series. On the surface, it seems like these are last-minute changes on the fly, but you never know with Vince McMahon, in the back of his mind, this could have been his plan all along.

Regardless, the hype surrounding Sunday's pay per view has drastically increased with The Shield taking on The New Day and Triple H being added to the main event.
