From the WWE Rumor Mill: Positive update on 'Broken' Matt Hardy trademark

What's the story?

According to PWInsider, Matt Hardy's 'Broken' gimmick may be available for him to use by January. More documentation for the trademark was submitted last month.

In case you didn't know...

The 'Broken' Matt Hardy character on Impact Wrestling last year captivated the imagination of wrestling fans world over and brought a lot of eyes to the ailing promotion.

But, after the Hardys moved to WWE earlier this year at WrestleMania, they lost the rights to that gimmick and a dispute over the character's ownership ensued between Impact and the brothers.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office had rejected his registration in May of this year, hence he had to submit more documents to register it under his name.

The heart of the matter

The PWInsider report states that the trademark will be in the books on December 19th and opposition parties will have 30 days to oppose it.

After the 30 days, if there is no opposition, Matt Hardy will hold all rights to the 'Broken' gimmick. The report further states that Matt can use the gimmick in the WWE or elsewhere.

Yesterday, Matt posted a cryptic tweet where he talked about how "worthwhile events in life typically aren't a sprint... they're a marathon" and that "patience & resolve are key" which certainly hints that the battle for the rights is nearing the end and that a resolution will be found soon.

What's next?

The saga of the rights to the 'Broken' gimmick looks set to continue as both parties - Impact and Matt Hardy - do not want to budge and give away this prized possession.

The older Hardy isn't in any feud on Monday Night Raw and with Jeff's injury, we're unsure when he will make his return to television.

Author's take

I'm eagerly waiting to witness the Broken Hardy gimmick on WWE television. Both Hardy brothers don't have any serious feuds ongoing and this would be a great way to get them back in the spotlight!
