What's the story?

The go-home shows of Raw and SmackDown Live before WWE's next pay-per-view, Backlash are now behind us and though the build-up has been a tad underwhelming, there are quite a few exciting matches on the card.

Five titles will be defended at the pay-per-view and CageSide Seats has speculated about possible title changes at the event.

In case you didn’t know…

Backlash is usually the first PPV post WrestleMania but this time, we had the Greatest Royal Rumble event post WrestleMania and before Backlash. However, the event did very little to advance any of the current storylines.

Backlash will officially be the first dual-branded pay-per-view, and as announced by WWE, all PPVs going forward will feature both Raw and SmackDown Superstars.

The heart of the matter

As mentioned, five Championships will be defended at Backlash this Sunday - WWE Championship, US Championship, Intercontinental Championship, Raw Women's Championship and SmackDown Women's Championship. As of this writing, the Tag Team Championships will not be defended at the pay-per-view.

According to CageSide Seats though, none of the titles will be changing hands at the pay-per-view. The WWE Championship match has been turned into a no DQ match now, but it looks like WWE will continue to keep the belt on AJ Styles. Jeff Hardy has just started his run as a singles competitor and it does not make sense for him to lose the title to Randy Orton at this point.

If WWE does decide to have a title change at the event, they might do so with the SmackDown Women's Championship. If Alexa Bliss loses her rematch at the event, it will give the other women in the roster to start feuding with Nia Jax for her title.

Finally, Seth Rollins has regained the momentum that he had lost, after winning the Intercontinental Championship. He kept the momentum going on Raw this past week, with a terrific title defence against Finn Balor. Also, since the US Title is already on SD, it would not make sense for Miz to win and take the Intercontinental Title back to the blue brand.

What's next?

Backlash will take place this Sunday, May 5th at the Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey. Stay tuned to Sportskeeda for live coverage of the event.

Author's take

It is not necessary to have title changes in order to make Backlash a great show. As long as WWE manage to keep the storyline engaging, fans will tune in to watch the fallout of the show for sure.
