AJ Styles' title win came as quite a shock

What's the story?

Recently AJ Styles shocked the WWE Universe by defeating Jinder Mahal and becoming a two-time WWE Champion, however in doing so 'The Phenomenal One' also earned himself a match against Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series. Although, new reports from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter suggest that Lesnar may not have known this was going to happen beforehand.

In case you didn't know...

Last week the plans for Survivor Series were drastically changed with Vince McMahon pulling the plug on the Jinder Mahal vs Brock Lesnar match by putting the WWE title on AJ Styles instead.

On top of this, the proposed Rusev vs Styles match to qualify for the SmackDown LIVE men's Traditional Survivor Series team was cancelled, with Shane McMahon incredibly announcing 'Free Agent' John Cena as a member of the team instead.

The heart of the matter

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has confirmed that the decision to put the WWE title on AJ Styles was a fairly last-minute one, with several people, including Styles and then champion Jinder Mahal, only finding out on the day of the taping what was about to happen.

However, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter goes on to suggest that this sudden title change may have been news to 'The Beast Incarnate' himself as all of his programmes are booked well in advance with Jinder Mahal being the plan all along as far as he was concerned. The report suggests that it's likely Lesnar would have found out after the title change happened.

What's next?

AJ Styles and Brock Lesnar will go on to have a 'dream' match at Survivor Series, although many in the WWE Universe fear that it will be a squash match in Lesnar's favour, given how easily he dispatched Braun Strowman and Roman Reigns.

Still, if Styles and Lesnar are booked to put on a good wrestling match with it not just being a one-sided affair, there's every chance it could steal the show at the upcoming pay-per-view.

Author's take

As much as Brock Lesnar probably doesn't care who he's set to go up against given the nature of his contract and appearances from the WWE, it's still a crazy indication of how last minute these changes were when it's alleged he wouldn't have known that his opponent at Survivor Series was about to change.
