From the WWE Rumour Mill: Dream match in the works for next year's Royal Rumble

Finn Balor set to wrestle Paul Heyman's client Brock Lesnar at Royal Rumble?
Finn Balor set to wrestle Paul Heyman's client Brock Lesnar at Royal Rumble?

What's the story?

The Royal Rumble might be several months away, but if Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio is to be believed, then the WWE has a huge marquee match penciled in for the Monday Night Raw Brand and that is Finn Balor vs Brock Lesnar.

In case you didn't know...

Currently, Brock Lesnar is not set to defend his title, or even compete at Raw's next Pay-Per-View TLC 2017. However, he is scheduled to answer Jinder Mahal's challenge to a match at Survivor Series this coming Monday on Raw.

Finn Balor on the other hand has yet to really go anywhere following his return from injury, and finds himself in a supernatural feud with Bray Wyatt with 'Sister Abigail' set to face 'The Demon King' at TLC.

Although, news of an illness Bray Wyatt is speculated to have might put Finn Balor's match in doubt.

The heart of the matter

On Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Ringside News), Dave Meltzer says that the WWE is keen to put Brock Lesnar against Finn Balor and are pushing for the match somewhere down the line.

Meltzer speculates that the last chance the WWE has to put the match on will probably be Royal Rumble.

Finn Balor has been quite vocal of late about his desire to face Brock Lesnar inside a WWE ring, saying that a match between himself and the Beast Incarnate would be 'most interesting' to WWE fans.

We saw Jinder Mahal recently say a dream match of his would be Brock Lesnar and now they're set to wrestle at Survivor Series so perhaps there's something in Balor's statements.

What's next?

There are so many variables in what could happen between now and the Royal Rumble, we don't know if Brock Lesnar will still be the champion by that point if he is still the champion, will it even be a title match?

Essentially we'll have to wait and see what happens as the months unfold.

Author's take

Personally, I think The Demon King vs The Beast Incarnate sells itself, but I worry that we'll get another limited wrestling display from Brock Lesnar and Finn Balor will simply join the ranks of top Raw stars who have quickly and easily been sent to Suplex City.
