GFW News: GFW Champion comments on being compared to The Rock

Ironically, The Rock and Drake worked on a show together!

Ironically, The Rock and Drake worked on a show together!

What's the story?

GFW Global Champion Eli Drake was interviewed by Interactive Wrestling Radio recently, and he shared his opinion on a variety of topics. Among them was being compared to The Rock, especially when it came to his microphone skills.

Drake says that he is flattered by the comparison because he considers The Rock to be in his personal Mount Rushmore of Wrestling. He added that it was just the way he spoke and he couldn't do much about it.

In case you didn't know...

After Alberto El Patron was stripped of his championship for his misconduct outside the ring, Eli Drake contested in a 20-man Battle Royal where he entered at Number 2 for the vacant GFW Global Championship. He won the title and is now the face of the promotion.

Drake and The Rock have previously been part of the same reality show, known as 'The Hero'. Drake's exceptional mic skills have earned him much praise and comparisons with Superstars like The Rock.

The heart of the matter

Eli Drake admitted that the way he speaks is quite similar to that of The People's Champion.

I can definitely tell you there were some times when I was watching “The Hero” back in 2013, there’d be a voice that would come on the screen and you did not see a face attached, sometimes I’d have a tough time telling who was The Rock and who was me. (laughs) I talk the way I talk. I can’t do much about that. (laughs).

Drake was obviously flattered by the comparison and named The Rock as one of his Mount Rushmore superstars, in addition to Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold Steve Austin and Ric Flair. He did maintain that some comparisons did come out of nowhere, especially when he was compared to superstars like Shawn Michaels or Stone Cold Steve Austin.

What's next?

Eli Drake puts up his title against Matt Sydal next week on GFW Impact in a singles match. That contest should be off the charts.

Author's take

As great as Drake is, I think he's his own man, and still not in the same league as The Rock was. He does have phenomenal mic skills though and is a great ambassador for GFW, currently.
