GFW's future hangs in the balance

What’s the story?

GFW Exec Kevin Sullivan has taken to social media to fire back at rumours of the company’s sale and Anthem Sports & Entertainment’s alleged plans to bow out of the professional wrestling business.

As per a recent Sports Illustrated report, GFW has been haemorrhaging funds and parent-company Anthem is looking to leave the pro-wrestling industry. In reference to the aforementioned report, Kevin Sullivan sent out a series of Tweets in a bid to dispel the reports:

In case you didn’t know…

Anthem Sports & Entertainment bought TNA/Impact Wrestling (now-GFW) and took over the promotion’s ownership from Dixie Carter, a few months ago.

However, Anthem has since run into severe financial problems in their bid to finance GFW. The pro-wrestling community is abuzz with talk of Anthem management planning to sell off GFW and end their ventures in the wrestling industry altogether.

The heart of the matter

GFW Executive Vice President of Production Kevin Sullivan took aim at Sports Illustrated’s aforementioned report of GFW’s sale. Besides criticising the outlet, he emphasised GFW’s latest announcements, a few of which are as follows:

1. GFW’s launch of the Global Wrestling Network.

2. Launch on Pluto TV. Venture in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Besides, the deal extension on Pop TV.

3. GFW’s ongoing mission to work with international broadcast partners, digital platforms and professional wrestling promotions to deliver fans a high-quality product.

Furthermore, Sullivan asserted that GFW is here to stay and discussions that suggest otherwise aren’t valid.

As per PWInsider, GFW management's meetings that went down this week focused on the promotion's future plans and did not include any talks of potentially selling its video library. Besides, there has been little to no interest on the part of WWE about potentially purchasing GFW's video library.

What’s next?

Regardless of the GFW management team’s aforementioned reassurances, the fact remains that the company is currently going through a rather tricky phase financially.

Whether or not Anthem decides to sell GFW will be determined over the course of the next few days.

Author’s take

GFW’s ongoing issues are no secret and it’s sad, as a longtime GFW TNA fan, to see the company possibly going out in such a messy fashion.

Here’s hoping GFW can get its act together and survive these tough times. After all, this is the very company that, once upon a time, provided great performers such as AJ Styles and Samoa Joe a platform to ascend to superstar status.
