Wrestling news: Damien Sandow is not sure if he'll ever wrestle again

What’s the story?

After announcing his departure from Impact Wrestling earlier this month, the former Damien Sandow spoke on the ‘X-Pac 12360’ podcast and discussed his future plans.

The Background

Just under a year ago, in May of 2016, Sandow was released from his WWE contract despite being one of the most popular performers on the roster. From there, he joined TNA in August and performed under the ring name, Aron Rex.

Although this seemed like a great signing for the company, Rex didn’t have the impact (no pun intended) that he or the TNA management would have been hoping for. That’s not to say his run was a complete failure, he certainly had his moments and garnered the desired interest in the TNA brand when he first debuted with them, but it was ultimately a brief stint with the company that recently came to an end after just eight months.

The heart of the matter

Since his departure from Impact Wrestling, rumours have spread that this could be the end of Sandow’s in-ring career. Sandow has gone out of his way to stress that he has not retired from the business, but can not guarantee that he will return to the ring.

During his appearance on Sean ‘X-Pac’ Waltman’s podcast this week, the former WWE Tag Team Champion spoke in more detail on his pro-wrestling future.

"I assure you the boots are not burnt. You know, will I ever lace them up again? I don't know. I'm a very transparent person, especially with the fans. I'm not going to lie and say, 'oh I'll be back.' You know I don't know if I'll be back maybe I will maybe I won't you know. But the one thing is I miss the interaction with the fans, I miss the crowds, and I miss being able to kind of like entertain you know.

Just put these weird twists on characters I genuinely do miss that. But again where I'm at in life right now it's just kind of taken me in a different direction not to say that I won't end up in a ring again."

What’s next?

It’s difficult to say what’s next for Sandow, even he doesn’t know what his next step will be. But I think it’s fair to say that if he does choose to stay in the wrestling business, there will be plenty of companies willing to book him.

Author’s take

It’s a shame that WWE never capitalised on Damien Sandow, either during his time as the ‘Intellectual Saviour of the Masses’ or as The Miz’s stunt double. As the former, I always pictured him as an upper mid-card heel and thought he would have been fantastic as an Intercontinental or United States Champion.

The work he put in to get over in the ‘stunt double’ role never got truly rewarded either and, although disappointed, fans wished him the best when he did leave the company. I’m sure many hoped he could have led Impact Wrestling into their new era too, but that wasn’t to be.

If this is to be the end of his career, Damien Sandow will be sorely missed by all pro-wrestling fans, but at least he has left us with numerous moments and segments that will be remembered for years to come.
