Joe Coffey discusses his Last Man Standing Match, adding members to Gallus & more (Exclusive)

We spoke exclusively with Joe Coffey!
We spoke exclusively with Joe Coffey!

Joe Coffey is one of NXT UK's most promising Superstars. Not only being one third of Gallus, the colossus has recently gained a new moniker of Last Man Standing following the ICW star's monumental victory at NXT UK TakeOver Cardiff against Dave Mastiff.

But what's next for Joe Coffey? Well, having previously caught up with Mark Coffey and Wolfgang, we caught up with the third member of Gallus, the Iron King, to discuss life as an NXT UK Superstar, dream opponents, who he would add to Gallus and what it's like to transition away from wrestling while painted.

So, there's only one place I can start - that's the Last Man Standing Match where you recently emerged victorious from a real colossal clash with Dave Mastiff at NXT UK TakeOver: Cardiff.

That card overall was insane. How difficult, or how easy, did you find it to go out there and have a match that truly stood out from the rest of that line-up on the night?

I didn't think it would be difficult at all because it was so different from everything else on the card.

For me, the win was great but it was more about making a statement and there's no bigger statement than being the last man standing in that match.

Some of the absolute brutality that went on in that match, to be the last man standing, I was pleased with it and there were a lot of unexpected twists and turns that happened in the match that kept us both on our toes, and for it to be exciting for us, I think would only transcend really well into the audience and, at times, people didn't really know what was going to happen - and that's everything a Last Man Standing Match should be. It should be absolute chaos.

Well, it definitely stood out for me and it's one that I've gone back to watch.

Good stuff. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Now I asked Mark and Wolfgang this question a couple of weeks back and got a couple of very interesting answers, so I'd love to know your view.

You can choose anybody that on the WWE roster to join Gallus. Who do you choose?

Hmm, there's a lot... We don't really play well with others, that's the thing, but if we had to, if the chips were down and it was to even the numbers, there's a lot of people we could put in.

I'm actually really liking, more recently, the way Noam Dar's been presenting himself and putting himself out there in NXT UK. I think it's been really interesting.

I think he would fit in well, especially since he's got a bit of a mouth on him, and if he had the boys to back him up.

I'd have to say Killian Dain. I know Mark and Wolfie had said him but we've been watching the new NXT on USA, and to see him doing exactly what I've done, just taking people out and getting rough with it, he could be a definite possibility but I think Drew [McIntyre] would be a very interesting addition... A very interesting addition to our firm. You've just got me thinking there.

NEXT: Where did the name 'Gallus' come from?

COMING UP: NXT UK TakeOver: Glasgow?

Being from Glasgow, I obviously love the name Gallus. Whose idea was that, and were there any other contenders when you came up with it?

No, no, the three of us put our heads together. I can't remember what we were initially throwing about but we were just trying to think of something that would suit us. I can't even remember who said it, but the three of us all agreed on Gallus.

It's a great word. It suits us down to the ground, do you know what I mean? You're bold, confident, cocky. For that, through our group and what we're about as a firm, there's no better word. For all three of us, being from Glasgow, there's no better word. It's a custom-made glove.

Now, before WWE, I was most well-versed with your work in ICW. You still wrestle for the company, obviously, but one notable shift in your character is that we don't tend to see you wearing body paint any more in either ICW or WWE.

Aside from probably being less messy, do you feel there's any difference between going out painted or not - do you feel more vulnerable now?

Well, the washing bills are less!

The amount of trunks I go through, the amount of apologies to both promoters or people I'm wrestling... But, no, I think it's different with presentation as well. I've been training a lot harder recently. I don't have paint to hide under.

I make that deliberate effort to make sure my presentation is different because you don't have that gratification of body paint or that mega exciting entrance like that.

It was good for what I was doing at the time but now it really wouldn't fit unless the occasion called for it.

Even wrestling-wise, it lets me get about the ring a lot more because, a lot of times, there was paint in my eyes which probably added some vulnerability at times!

But it was a really fun thing to do, and I think the crowd took to it as well. I got to essentially be a blank canvas and do different artwork on that as well as artwork in the ring.

I might know the answer to this, so we'll make it more specific. If you could choose one venue in the UK for an upcoming TakeOver, which would it be?

Hmm. See, obviously I'm going to choose Glasgow. I would choose Glasgow... I think it would have to be the Hydro, that's a great building. I'd love to do Barrowlands, I don't think that would be possible but it is a really special building.

Outside of Glasgow, I think somewhere like Dublin would be a really interesting turn, or Newcastle as well. Just different crowds but equally as loud and up for it as the Glasgow crowd - but Glasgow definitely tops the list for me!

Interesting that you say that, you've already wrestled - and defeated - one WWE Hall of Famer in the Hydro in Kurt Angle, so it's TakeOver Glasgow, you get told, "Joe, we want you headlining, you get to choose your opponent and the stipulation, and it can be anyone from NXT UK, NXT, Raw, SmackDown, or 205 Live. Anyone."

Who do you want to go up against?

Right now, it would have to be WALTER for that United Kingdom Championship. Straight-up wrestling match. 60-minute time limit. That's what I want.

Well, you are the Iron Man! Thank you so much for chatting with me, it's been a pleasure.

Thank you! See you later!
