John Cena and AJ Styles finished an incredible feud at Summerslam that saw Styles go over Cena for the second time, and this time around it was a clean victory. A heel winning a feud over Cena, let alone clean, is an extreme rarity in Cena’s career. But the fact that they had him win the feud, just goes to show how invested they are in Styles for the future knowing that Cena isn’t going to be a full-time wrestler anymore.
Recently at Phoenix Comic Con, John Cena, Daniel Bryan and The Bella Twins had a Q & A panel, and when someone asked how Cena felt about AJ Styles defeating him, he said:
"I got to give all the credit in the world to AJ Styles. Every week I'm on television for WWE and I say out loud, whoever the next person wants to grab this thing by the horns and run with it, whoever they think they are they have to go through me.
And AJ Styles has not only gone through me, but through everyone else, and for a guy who had a relatively slow start - an exciting debut - and it looked like he may not make it, and for him with his back against the wall and literally fighting for his career, to step up and he's beaten me a couple of times, but I think he's one of the best superstars in the WWE, period."
Cena went into a little bit of kayfabe and said that while he doesn't agree with a lot of things AJ Styles says or the way he acts, he can't ignore how gifted he is in the ring. Cena proceeded to say that while he doesn’t know whether Styles will be a multiple time champion because he doesn’t know how long he will be a champion, but he said that it was a pleasure to be in the ring with him.
AJ Styles vs John Cena was considered an instant classic among the fans and by far the best match on the Summerslam card this year, simply because of not only the technical wrestling but the story told in the ring. Styles has benefited massively from going over Cena clean and has been riding a hot wave of momentum, with my fans considering him to be the MVP of Smackdown Live.
