WWE News: Al Roker of The Today Show to make appearance at WrestleMania 33

John Cena has been appearing on The Today Show since 2015, Roker has been on the show since 1990...

What’s the story?

John Cena was on The Today Show on March 27th and extended the invitation to long-time host Al Roker to appear at WrestleMania 33 this Sunday, Roker enthusiastically accepted the invitation.

As per PWInsider, the assumption is that Roker will be the guest ring announcer for the mixed tag match that pits Miz and Maryse against Cena and Nikki Bella.

In case you didn’t know...

Since August of 2015, Cena has been making appearances as a guest co-host of the NBC morning show.

He has made several guest hosting appearances on the show since then. Appearing on The Today Show has been a springboard for Cena for other television roles such as hosting Saturday Night Live and hosting the ESPY Awards on ESPN.

The heart of the matter...

Ever since the first WrestleMania, one of the defining characteristics of the event is the merging of celebrities and pro wrestling. Since Cena has such a good relationship with NBC and The Today Show, it makes complete sense to have Al Roker involved.

Roker has been with The Today show since 1990. He took over full time in place of Willard Scott in 1996.

What’s next?

The final editions of Monday Night Raw and SmackDown Live are upon us. Expect a lot of fireworks to occur on both shows as it is the final chapter for the biggest pay per view of the year.

One can expect Michael Cole and/or Mauro Ranallo (or Tom Phillips if Mauro is still out) to make the Roker announcement on their respective shows.

Author’s Take

While Al Roker may not excite your average WWE fan, it is still interesting to see celebrities that are not typically involved in the world of professional wrestling taking part in WrestleMania. As mentioned previously, it’s what the pay per view is all about.

At the very first WrestleMania, you had celebrities such as Muhammad Ali, Liberace, and Cyndi Lauper having roles. Al Roker won’t get the biggest pop of the night, but just having unique personalities on the show is a great thing for all parties involved.
