Big E may have suffered a career-ending injury.

It was an unfortunate week for the wrestling world after one of the most beloved superstars in WWE, Big E, suffered a horrific neck injury on SmackDown. A major update regarding the injury has emerged, and it suggests that we might not see him continue his wrestling career moving forward.

In the latest edition of SmackDown, The New Day faced Sheamus and Ridge Holland in a tag team match. The former WWE Champion was dropped badly on his head with a mistimed belly-to-belly suplex from Holland at ringside. Big E was stretchered to the back, and he subsequently revealed that he broke his neck.

The New Day star later offered an update on his injury by stating that he did not require surgery, but his C1 and C6 vertebrae have been fractured.

An update on the situation from former WWE physician Dr. David Cho noted that a C1 fracture "heals incompletely" and this could potentially end Big E's wrestling career.

"The C1 fracture is most dangerous as the top cervical vertebrae is a ring and is commonly associated with immediate death or complete paralysis. Thankfully the fracture was not displaced and he will not need surgery. However, this type of fracture often heals incompletely and it may mean the end of his wrestling career."

Dr. Cho went on to highlight the severity of the injury and a possible time frame for recovery in such cases.

"The C6 fracture is likely a compression injury to the vertebral body," Dr. Cho continued. "This likely requires immobilization but not surgery. One would anticipate a minimum of three-month recovery with return to full function and activities for this lower cervical injury."

Big E is one of the most beloved superstars in WWE

Since the horrific incident, tons of WWE Superstars have voiced their support for the New Day member. Several stars tweeted their best wishes to the former WWE Champion, and a few heels, such as The Miz, broke kayfabe to send him their regards.

It was also reported by Sean Ross Sapp that some WWE Superstars, including Ridge Holland and Drew McIntyre, went to see him in the hospital. The support from the wrestling world shows just how adored the New Day star is.

It would be deeply saddening if fans never got to see such a beloved personality such as Big E never wrestle again. We here at Sportskeeda wish him the best in his recovery and hope to see him make his return to the ring.
