At Wrestle Kingdom 19, Yota Tsuji defeated David Finlay to win the title. The match's closing moments saw the 31-year-old hit a Powerbomb and follow up with the Gene Blaster for the win.
Tsuji's professional wrestling career began as a NJPW young lion. In 2023, he returned to the company after an excursion in Revolution Pro Wrestling and Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre.
He returned to Japan in 2023, attacking then-IWGP World Heavyweight Champion, SANADA. The star eventually joined Los Ingobernables de Japon before unsuccessfully challenging SANADA for the title.
Tsuji's victory over Finlay marked his first-ever reign as a singles champion in NJPW. His only other championship accomplishment in the company was winning the NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Championships with Bushi and Hiromu Takahashi. He will defend the title against Jack Perry tomorrow night at Wrestle Dynasty.
