WWE News: Dolph Ziggler on the brand split, making the Intercontinental Championship prestigious again

Dolph Ziggler won the Intercontinental Championship at No Mercy

Dolph Ziggler recently did an interview with Sky Sports to promote WWE’s ongoing UK tour.

When asked about the brand split this past July, the Intercontinental Champion said that it gave more chances for younger talent to get on TV and also for them to get more microphone time. The brand split was also responsible for giving Raw and Smackdown Live exclusive rosters and Pay Per Views.

Ziggler said that he benefited greatly from the brand split, owing to which he was able to completely reinvent his character since he was given the chance to be himself.

When asked about the Intercontinental Title and the emphasis WWE has been giving it to make it more prestigious, Ziggler credited his on-screen arch rival ‘The Miz’ for making the championship more reputable.

He spoke about how for 20 to 30 years, The Intercontinental Championship was a stepping stone or for a star to prove their worth as a future World Champion. He thought The Miz did a great job of restoring the title’s status back to its’ former reputation.

Ziggler also said that he hoped for the Intercontinental Championship to be a part of the main events of Smackdown Live and stated that it could even be the focal point of the show.

At No Mercy, given that the main event World Championship match between AJ Styles, John Cena, and Dean Ambrose was moved to the opening slot (due to the Presidential Debate), many felt that the Intercontinental Championship match between The Miz and Dolph Ziggler should have been the main event.

Instead, Randy Orton vs Bray Wyatt closed out the show. There were reports at the time that Vince McMahon was all praises for the Ziggler-Miz match at the PPV, and that he regretted not putting it on last.

Dolph Ziggler, along with The Miz have been among the primary beneficiaries of the brand split. Even though The Miz was already on a roll since winning the Intercontinental Championship. the move to Smackdown Live has helped him greatly.

The buzz about The Miz began from his Talking Smack promo against Daniel Bryan, which many considered the greatest promo of his career thus far. The fact that Ziggler put his career on the line for a shot at the Intercontinental title made people believe that the prestige of the championship had been raised once again.
