Jerry Lawler has been on the road to recovery over the last 20 months after a stroke forced him to stop commentating and wrestling. In an exclusive interview, the Hall of Famer addressed his status with WWE.
Lawler joined WWE in 1992 as an announcer and in-ring competitor. The 74-year-old formed an iconic commentary partnership with Jim Ross during WWE's popular Attitude Era. He also appeared on premium live event kickoff shows before suffering a second stroke on February 7, 2023.
Speaking to Sportskeeda Wrestling Senior Editor Bill Apter, Lawler confirmed he still works for WWE but his voice is no longer strong enough for commentary:
"Well, my health has been a big problem for me lately. I had, first of all, a couple of strokes. That's what cost me my deal with WWE with my commentating because my voice, it's not perfect, but it's not good enough to do commentating." [0:37 – 1:01]

Jerry Lawler signed a WWE Legends contract
Armando Estrada, Jacqueline, Ken Shamrock, Mick Foley, and Victoria are among the former WWE Superstars who have signed Legends contracts in recent months.
Jerry Lawler added that he still receives an income through WWE as part of his Legends contract, also known as a Nostalgia contract:
"I'm still part of the family. The best part of that is I think four times a year I get a nice, big check, and that's good." [1:39 – 1:51]
Lawler is widely viewed as one of the greatest commentators and wrestlers of all time. In 2007, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by actor William Shatner.
