WWE News: Nikki Bella confirms that she will be taking a break from the WWE

John Cena proposing to Nikki Bella at WrestleMania 33

What’s the story?

During a recent interview with the E Network, Nikki Bella announced that she’ll be taking time away from the WWE ring due to an injury.

In case you didn't know...

At WrestleMania 33, Bella and her now-fiance, John Cena, defeated the Miz and Maryse in a mixed tag-team match.

As soon as the match ended, Cena got on one knee and finally proposed to the former-Divas champion. The newly-engaged couple have finished with their rivalry with The Miz and Maryse, just in time for them to take time away from the company.

Bella’s neck injury is well-documented, so much so that her career was threatened due to the severity of her ailment. At one point, Bella missed several months of action and while it was a storyline on her reality show, Total Divas, there was a chance that she would not have wrestled again.

The heart of the matter

Bella did say that she cannot wait to get back to the ring, and when she does, she’s hopeful that her sister, Brie Bella, would be there with her. She was quoted as saying:

"Recently I had to get MRIs and CT scans and we realized that I have a slight herniation above where I had surgery, which isn't good, which means I have to take time off and I have to heal.

And hopefully when that heals, if it does, I can get back in the ring, I pray that it won't be a long time but, I don't know, it's in God's hands.”

What’s next?

Nikki added more to her departure from the WWE with a heartfelt Twitter post that does give hope that she’ll come back when she is healthy enough.

With Nikki gone, there will be a huge void left on the main roster. Due to the “Superstar shake-up” taking place next week, the brand that Nikki Bella and John Cena end up wrestling on could change.

Author’s take

Despite the criticism that Nikki gets from a minority of the WWE Universe, she has done a fantastic job at re-inventing herself and being taken seriously as a pro wrestler. When she started out, she was labelled as eye candy during the dark days of the Divas era.

Now, she’s the longest-reigning Divas champion of all-time and a consistent contender in the Women’s Division. Hopefully, she has a speedy recovery and returns by SummerSlam.
