We're counting down the days to this epic clash
We're counting down the days to this clash for the ages

What's the story?

WWE icon Chris Jericho takes on IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega on January 4th at the Tokyo Dome in the co-main event of Wrestle Kingdom 12. It will be the first major professional wrestling event of the year, and a match to remember.

Ahead of their match, Chris Jericho was interviewed on the NJPW YouTube Channel. During the course of the interview, Jericho compared this clash to Mayweather vs. McGregor.

In case you didn't know...

What made the clash between Mayweather and McGregor so noteworthy was the fact that nobody expected the fight to happen. Mayweather is perhaps the greatest boxer in history and McGregor, was the greatest to step inside the Octagon.

It was Mayweather's domain, and he ended up picking up the victory in this historic match. The highly publicised match did really big numbers and broke box office records across the world.

The heart of the matter

Jericho equated his own match against Omega to the Mayweather-McGregor clash, in the following manner:

This match was very important to me and very interesting because it's a match that nobody thought could happen. It's a lot like Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor in you take two huge stars from two separate places and put them in a match that nobody thought could happen.

He went on to add why fans should be hyped for this huge match:

So, to me, it's exciting for me after 27 years of being in the wrestling business, it's exciting for the fans both in New Japan and worldwide, and I think it gives Kenny a whole new aspect of his career.

What's next?

We're only days away from this match. Stay tuned to Sportskeeda Wrestling for updates from this sports entertainment extravaganza. Also let us know who you're rooting for, in the comments section.

Author's take

Well, all of professional wrestling is hyperbole so we'll let this one slide. The truth is that even though the announcement took the wrestling world by storm, Jericho-Omega isn't even in the same ballpark at Mayweather vs. McGregor was.

That said, it'll still be a very good match, in my estimation.
