What's the story?

Following his successful win over the legendary Jushin "Thunder" Liger earlier today at NJPW: Strong Style Evolved, current IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion Will Ospreay laid out a challenge for a one-on-one match to pro wrestling veteran and former WWE World Champion Rey Mysterio.

In case you didn't know...

Rey Mysterio was originally scheduled to compete in a match against Jushin "Thunder" Liger at NJPW's first ever Strong Style Evolved show which took place at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, California.

However, the match was eventually scrapped due to an unfortunate bicep injury to the legendary mask luchador, which he suffered at a recent Northeast Wrestling show.

The heart of the matter

As noted, earlier in the day, current IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion Will Ospreay went toe-to-toe with NJPW's veteran junior heavyweight Jushin "Thunder" Liger at NJPW's first ever Strong Style Evolved show.

Ospreay, who recently regained the Jr. Heavyweight Title at Wrestle Kingdom 12, eventually went on to defeat Liger via his finishing manoevure - The Oscutter - and with Rey Mysterio sitting at ringside and getting a closer look of all the live action, "The Aerial Assassin" certainly did make a huge impact with this win.

Following the match, Ospreay got a grab of a microphone and cut a promo stating that he wants to take the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title to a new level and thus challenged Rey Mysterio to a probable one-on-one match, sometime down the road in New Japan Pro Wrestling.

However, that was apparently not the end of the action, as the former Jr. Heavyweight Champion Marty Scurll then decided to make his presence felt as he attacked Ospreay from the back with his signature umbrella and seemingly snatched away Rey Mysterio's mask as well, which was a terrible sign of disrespect from "The Villain".

What's next?

We have previously witnessed a one-on-one match between Ospreay and Mysterio at WCPW's 2017 Pro Wrestling World Cup, however, a rematch in an NJPW ring will certainly be well received by Pro Wrestling fans around the world.

Also, as seen, Rey Mysterio himself has additionally guaranteed that he will indeed wrestle for New Japan Pro Wrestling sometime down the line, once he fully recovers from his bicep injury.

Author's Take

Ospreay vs Mysterio, in my opinion, will be another classic match, however, I feel like Marty Scurll is currently next in line for a shot at the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title.
