Randy Orton’s last match was at Backlash against heel John Cena for the Undisputed WWE Championship. He did not win the gold, thanks to R-Truth coming out to save his now-fallen hero. Following that, he has been off the show.
On RAW, it was revealed that he would be part of the qualifying matches for the King of the Ring Tournament. Here, he has been scheduled to face Carmelo Hayes, LA Knight, and Aleister Black on SmackDown. Also on the list of competitors is Cody Rhodes.
Since Rhodes won the title at WrestleMania 40, Orton has had his eyes on it. WWE repeatedly showed The Viper stealing glances at the belt. However, he was never able to get the opportunity to win it. If he and Rhodes do qualify for the main spot, they will face off at Night of Champions on June 28.
Here is where fans could see The Legend Killer turn heel on someone he used to call his friend. This would make sense from a storyline perspective, as he was The American Nightmare’s mentor during his early days.
The reason behind Orton’s heel turn would be simple. Since Rhodes is the one WWE wants to dethrone John Cena, he would win his match against The Viper. This would set up Rhodes’ one-on-one match with the 17-time World Champion at SummerSlam.
Here, The Viper could turn heel and help The Franchise Player retain his title. But there would be a clause that he gets another title shot. Fans have been waiting to see a heel Orton, but WWE hasn’t found the right moment or time to make it happen. This could be it, but it should be noted that this is all speculation for now.
Randy Orton wants John Cena to induct him into the WWE Hall of Fame
When it comes to getting inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, wrestlers want the person who was closest to them to do the honors. In Orton’s case, he wants John Cena to be that person. During an interview with Adam’s Apple, he was asked that very question.
“My wife actually just brought that up the other day, and we were thinking about it, and we didn’t know who could be the guy, Hunter came up, Cena came up, Flair came up... I don’t know if I’d be able to get Cena to come in from Hollywood to do it, maybe he could do it virtually, I don’t know,” Orton said. [0:51 onwards]
It is clear that the two share an immense amount of respect for each other. Despite their countless feuds in WWE, they have remained strong friends. What better time to see a heel Orton help his close friend, John Cena?
