The art of being a ‘big man’ wrestler is something that, contrary to popular belief, not everyone can do. You need to be capable of backing up what your character portrays in the ring, as having an imposing presence isn’t always enough to be successful.

Thankfully for Tyrus, formerly known as Brodus Clay in WWE, he doesn’t have that problem. The 45-year-old veteran is back in Impact Wrestling following a short absence, and it’s clear to see that he has one thing on his mind – becoming the world champion.

During a recent teleconference, we were able to pick the brain of the former NXT contestant, as he spoke about the importance of having options as a professional wrestler.

SK: As we know in addition to your pro wrestling career you’re also a political commentator. In your mind, how important is it for professional wrestlers to have another plan or career lined up either alongside wrestling or for when they hang up their boots?
Tyrus: I think it’s essential. You cannot do this forever, and the guys who stay too long, I think, are disrespectful to the business. I don’t think it’s fair to see a 60-year-old guy in the ring. It’s a feel-good moment for the fans, but it’s really a disconnect and it’s time to move on. I’m not real supportive of the classics who hang around for too long because I don’t think it’s fair.
It hurts the brand and the business, not to mention the fact you want to be able to grow in life. If you were a great wrestler and you moved on to be whatever it is you choose to be, it just goes to show how successful wrestlers are to be a sports entertainer and then transition to other things. You need to have a plan because things aren’t always promised. You get fired, then what are you gonna do?

The honesty of Tyrus is something that has always been one of his best features, and whether you like him or you don’t, nobody can deny that he’s one of the smartest pro wrestlers to have ever stepped foot inside the squared circle.
